... not because their music sucks and inherently pisses you off, but because they called it a day when they could've continued on. Which bands do you feel this way about?

Maybe N*Sync. I don't follow too many music groups.

Bahah, well-played. I meant bands that you actually like/are good. Although it's totally fine if you like N*Sync.

Ah, the Zombies. Yeah, I agree there. (I haven't seen you around in at least three fiscal quarters, Anna--how are you?)

Aaaaaand I thought I posted that comment twenty minutes ago.

That's how it is for most of the bands I like, too, Leon. Actually, I can only think of one or two bands I like that fit in this category.

... Alvin.

My Morning Jacket -
Why?
If you leave the house in a jacket, fine, it's a morning jacket... but when you get home it's an afternoon jacket or a night jacket. Dusk jacket, even.
If you're wearing a jacket in the morning also returning in the morning, why did you even leave? And What Makes It A Morning Jacket Anyway!?

I just can't deal with it.

Jeez, Mitch, now that you've brought it to my attention, I can't either. I always sort of simply ignored them. Alas, another thing to grieve upon in this sad, sad world...

Also, Harlem Shakes. They came out with one amazing definitive summer album and then broke up.

I am annoyed at the opposite problem: bands that continue on when they should have stopped a long time ago. I was in a grocery store a couple years ago and I was like "oh this song sounds like a shitty watered down Green Day song."

It was Green Day. :/
blossompossum
blossompossum on Jul 15 '11 at 10:34pm
:( indeed, James. That's always a shit predicament.

"Suicide my balls" sounds like a twist on "FML". I have heard one song by Harlem Shakes and am not currently in the mood to hear it again.

I'm well, thanks! I am not doing very much at all right now--lull before the storm and whatnot.

Hahaha, Amy, I have that, too. Rolling Stones, anyone?

I normally get angry at bands when they start releasing really shit albums after so many great ones, meaning that if I haven't already seen them live, I have no desire to anymore. There have been countless times when I've eagerly anticipated my favourite bands' new release, only to find they've changed style and not for the better. The Jazz June did it with Better Off Without Air, Kings Of Leon did it with Only By The Night. I'm sure there are more examples but right now that's all I got.
Bramish
   Bramish on Jul 16 '11 at 2:28am
I guess Green Day did it too after Dookie, but they did it more gradually.

i assume that's a symptom of having your arse perpetually kissed by fans and label cronies. at first everyone's hungry and wants to be huge and works hard, but after a few years of "omg you're a brilliant attractive genius" it must be tempting to rest on one's laurels.
blossompossum
blossompossum on Jul 16 '11 at 10:38pm
True, Amelia. (Also, it's been a while.)

Meh, it's all good, Clarice. I mean, not Fall Out boy, obviously, but that doesn't matter.

That pisses me off pretty well, too, Stuart. Another example I can think of is Interpol, although they didn't change a lot as much as they simply started not sounding so good. They're not one of my favourites, but they sound(ed) good.

I agree, Leon... That said, I'm sure there're a few bands that were somewhat revered and never let it go to their heads. But then, my primary example for this were respected only by a small fan-base, not by the masses or any particular group at large.

U2 - how are they still so big? they've not made a decent album in twenty fucking years! they've been a shit band for longer than they were a tolerable band. at least they're not the stones - unbeatable up until the mid 70s, fucking turgid shit that nobody's interested in hearing for nearly FORTY FUCKING YEARS!!!! i guess oasis are the same. they make one good album, think they're the new beatles, and then make absolute shit since.

Oh I just opened iTunes and I can pre-order the Red Hot Chili Peppers' new album. I was wondering what happened to them. Like obviously I knew they were together and touring I guess, but they haven't really released anything in a while and I didn't like Stadium Arcadium.

They were on the verge of self-destructing a few times, before Californication came out and if they had, maybe I'd be listing them as one of those bands you get angry at for breaking up too soon.

But now, I'm just kind of meh about them. I'm not going to be mad at any band that stays together "too long" or releases "crap" albums or whatever. If they're having fun and other people like them enough I'm not going to hate on them for continuing to do what they want to do. And I always look forward to the possibility that even though they might be more scarce, they'll still make good songs in there somewhere that we'd miss out on if they quit "at the top of their game."

And I like that I have the opportunity to go see the Rolling Stones, even if they can't move as fast, or their voices are weak, it beats knowing they broke up before I was born so I'll never get that chance. Not that I really want to see the Stones, they're just an example people tend to use of people who should have quit already.

I get what you're saying, John. Although it's nice to have them around, though, I'm still one of those people to thinks that a band should call it a day or at least take a break when they stop being prolific or consistent with quality. A big part of sucking seems to be related believing your own mythos.

Alan, Jeff is playing a show in a city that I'm moving to 17 days before I move there. What the hell.

Most of my bands have carried on way, way past the point where they should have finished, almost all of them got dropped by their labels and most of the music they make now is pretty lousy.

I was kinda angry at Death From Above 1979 but then they got back together. I hope a new album is in the works.

About bands that should've quit years ago, the Cure comes to mind. Wish was the last good album and that was in 1992

R.E.M. kind of tanked after the mid-90s and put out a string of really listless mediocre crap. They probably should have called it a day after Bill Berry left.

Although their last album was quite good, actually. But still. They're on thin ice.

I've never heard of Harlem Shakes, but that is an awesome video.

And I don't know if I'm angry at them, but I'm kinda confused about Blink-182. I'm a fan of their music, and even though I was bummed about the hiatus when it happened, I can't see what else they can give now that they're back together. I'm just glad that they don't seem to have any intention to do whatever the hell Green Day is doing.

And I hate Billy Corgan. That dude is just a dickwad.
