This is my latest WIP, called Distraction. I had it sitting around for a while so thought i'd get it finished. It's mostly done I think, but thought i'd put it up here before I sub tomorrow sometime.

Whadaya think? Should I leave the clouds in or take them out? Any other suggestions?

nice. its a little hard to tell that the people are focused on the drowning "man" at first. probably because the dominant guy is just facing forward.

or maybe its because when i first looked at it, i saw the large image and the drowning guy was behind all your subs. lol.

ha this is a nice spin on the angler fish type creature--the textures are really nice

Thanks guys!

Lajlaj- you may have a point, i might give a bit of added thought to the people.

one thing you might want to think about---there isn't too much contrast between the underwater blue color and above water blue. it makes it just a little hard to read where the water line is, but that's just a thought....

Yeah- I've been trying to figure a way to emphasise the water line a little bit more. I think i'll do a few touch ups with the colours very slightly, hopefully it will help.

yeah i agree pretty much about the water contrast. sweet textures. i have to learn how to do that.

Thanks man, i'll have to wait till tomorrow to muck around with it anymore. I'm thinking of doing a texture tutorial sometime. When I can be bothered.

do that. and send us your texture brushes. bwhahahaha!

srsly kickass. just work on the distinction on the water line and it's all set. good luck!

Maybe a person on the main deck with his/her hands in a "home alone" to the face kind of expression? It would fill the boat out a bit and maybe make it funnier? Besides that, this is a nice take on a theme I have seen a few times on Threadless, but done in a different enough way you are good to go!

UPDATE

Slight colour change to help water line stand out more, and a tidy up of the people in the boat, which you may not e able to see at these sizes.

Better?

it's sort of weird that the water doesn't connect between the boat and monster.

I'd also add a couple more small fish or move them a little. That one under the boat is very centralized in the triangle shape and draws a lot of attention for me.

cool textures!

outline the "tail dude" in white and add splashes of water perhaps also in white to make it stand out a little more.. other than that.. this is flawless.. nice work!!!

this is great, bert.
I love what you did to imply a water line - but I fear it may be too subtle for the mass voters. you may want to see what a very, very, very subtle water line across the middle might look like.
adding some panicky water splashes around the "drowning" tail man is a pretty good suggestion from the above, too. a few more fish is a good suggestion, too.
sometimes critique posting actually works!
maybe have some fish watching the tail and what's going on would add even more comedy to the whole thing.
I like the clouds, but I got a mean cloud bias going on.

Thanks for the input guys.

I tried adding the water line, but I think I like the implied-ness of the waterline too much. Hopefully it doesn't hurt the score, but I think that might just be my personal artistic preferance.

That small fish does need to be moved now that you've mentioned it Castle.

Also, white splashes could be a nice detail which I think i'll add.

Oh, thanks Starr- hadn't seen your comment before that last post.

I may try just extending the water line past each object a small way, but not the full length. That could perhaps be the best of both worlds.

ooh, that could do it, WB.
but, like i said, I like the implication. make sure it's true to the whole.

Here's a quick screenshot of what i've done. Does it go too far or should they join up?

It's like a better version of one of my early subs:

Love the texture. and the water lines help it out too. Good stuff.

I love the texture, and the water lines help a lot. Am I Ross now?

A texture tutorial would be great and much appreciated. I've always wanted to know how to do that.

Thanks guys! I forgot about your design Ross.
I think this'll be ready to sub soon.

I will do a tutorial soon. I'm just no normally the best at explaining things- I tend to make up words. But maybe pictures will help- they're worth 1000 right?
