about Gay Pride
I fully support the gay community. I have many friends who are gay or bi, and one of my closest friends in high school, who helped me through a rough patch in my emotional life, was also a member of the gay community. Heres my problem though: I'm not. As someone who is Heterosexual, but fully in support of the gay community, I have never felt right wearing smething or making statements like gay pride. I can't say I have gay pride, in the same sense I can't say I have african pride, or asian pride, or I don't know, jewish pride, cause I'm not.

so here is my point:

when is there going to be shirt for my ilk, with an underlying statement like "Although I am not gay, I stand behind those who are, and fully give them my support."

oh, and lastly, pink doesn't go with my skin tone at all ;)

Search up, "Not Gay, But Supportive" on Google.

You'll find a shirt.

PS: You will.

I don't think that Threadless printed this shirt with the intention for it to be only worn by the gay population. It's pretty open to whatever statement you'd like it to communicate -- whether your message is that you are gay and show gay pride, or whether you're straight but support people who are gay, or that you just think that it's a clever design. It works on many levels.

it's a pun though, like communist party

though i personally don't like it for the pun, i like it because it looks neat

i have the same problem because some of my best friends are gay or bi and during their "day of silence" thing at school you either support them and feel really weird or you dont and your friends hate you....kinda sucky either way

the thing is...i like the shirt

i dont think if i wore it down the street anyone would know it was a "gay pride" shirt

Search for "straight but not narrow."

It's been done.

It's not a gay pride shirt, it's a shirt with a pun.

"I fully support the gay community. I have many friends who are gay or bi..."

This sounds very much in the vein of "I'm not a racist, I have black friends".

The "OMG this shirt will tell people I'm gay" sentiment pops up now and then: I've seen in on Afternoon Delight, and anything pink...

I figure anyone concerned that a shirt on this site makes them look gay is just afraid of being outed.

This is the coolest tee I have seen printed in a while. Either wear it to be proud or wear it for the pun.

i am aware the shirt is a pun. still, despite the point that its a good joke, i really don't like how pink looks on me.

You should wear your Total Gaylord shirt with pride. At least I do.

Why make it "a problem" with it at all? If you like it, buy/wear it. If you don't, don't. Chances are most people who see someone in this shirt will just think, "Oooh, lions!"

What's this day of silence thing?
Julie Jerks
Julie Jerks on Jun 20 '07 at 4:14am
I don't think anyone will get it anyway. I bet 19 out of 20 are just gonna be like "huhuhu...that lion is totally sniffing that other lion's ass."

For the record, I'm not gay either, and I just bought it. It reminds me of Turbonegro.

I don't understand why people are so worried that they might be mistaken for a gay person. People assume gay people are straight, so what's the difference?

Unless you're worried that you're gonna get beaten up or something. Hmm.

I don't personally see any problem with wearing things that support a marginalised group of which you are not a member (my bro wears a "Free Palestine" shirt, and he's not Palestinian - and loads of people wear those kheffiyehs as a symbol of support for Palestine/Lebanon). Similarly, I don't see a problem with taking part in an organised silence, or a march, as an act of support.

haha i actually have a pending sub here that has somewhat of a hidden symbol for being supportive of gays

in the middle of the design you will see the word 'down' with striped colors symbolizing a rainbow underneath. so its kind of like 'im down with the gay community'

...but in all actuality i didnt even think of that til now. i just randomly put the word down in the design

"the word 'down' with striped colors symbolizing a rainbow underneath. so its kind of like 'im down with the gay community'"

That could also mean "Down with Gays." I'm just saying.

maybe they can make a shirt that says:

"Gay Pride Curious"

Or add another lion to this shirt, off to the side, saying, "right on, dudes! Do your thing!"

I dunno...
13strong
13strong on Jun 20 '07 at 10:37am
Or people could just not worry about showing support for gay people. What's the concern exactly?

yeah i doubt many people will get the meaning of this shirt right away. even most gays probably. since most people dont think about the fact that prides are full of female lions and one or two male. :)

i would totally wear this out at the gay clubs! cause i'm a fag hag and proud of it :)
shirtflirt
shirtflirt on Jun 21 '07 at 12:02am
yeah, sadly, tolerance has to be pointed out to people....

this sentence:

Although I am not gay, I stand behind those who are

reminded me of something i'd read in the onion.

want to wear = buy

don't want to wear = don't buy

Instead of wringing your hands over this group and that group and what people think, just treat everyone with respect. That way, you're covered.

Everything's gotta be so damn complex...

My (gay and out) brother says he wouldn't wear the shirt 'cause he (gasp!) doesn't like the design. He also compared it to a caucasian wearing a MalcomX shirt and said he wouldn't be offended if a straight guy wore the shirt but he might hit on him ;-)

--dude, i think many black folks would find that statement very, very retarded
epocalypse
epocalypse on Jun 21 '07 at 12:21pm
i was making a general comment using the shirt as an example. the honest to god main reason i wouldn't wear this shirt is i don't like how i look in pink. obviously, other things are more declarative in their statement, but just because its a pun on those words does not mean it loses their meaning.
epocalypse
epocalypse on Jun 21 '07 at 12:23pm
also, i don't know about where you guys live, but in manhattan, if you go around wearing anything pink, purple, or with a rainbow, as a grown man, well, a lot of people on both sides of the debate tend to jump to a certain conclusion.

LOL 13strong

Shirtflirt, in light of the original post it certainly isn't retarded imo, I believe he meant that some G&L might be offended in the same way some africanamericans might feel that you're not black you have no idea of our daily struggle so don't even try to coopt our icons. Remember that he said he wouldn't wear it but not for that reason.

apocalypse, I know this seems like it is on other people and their reaction to an image/idea/etc. but ultimately it comes down to you imo. As a girl with large breasts I am not going to always go around in my Nice Boobies tee. Sometimes it's totally fun to get that kind of attention, sometimes you're just totally not in the mood or that isn't the image of yourself you wish to project. So, sometimes you might want to project yourself as a supporter of gay rigts who doesn't mind a little freiendly flirting from either sex and sometimes that just isn't going to be appropriate or the kind of mood you're in. That's totally 100% ok though!

I also hate the idea that they should be "tolerated". They're not doing anything that needs to be tolerated.

What's needed is acceptance.
