I'm gonna show you how to make a detailed sketch transformed into a vector artwork suited for a shirt design =D i would also have to credit Mike Mitchell(a.k.a stickymike) MikeMitchell for his awesome linework maker thingy, it helps a lot when your planning to make detailed linework transform into a linework vector =D
I have here now the complete process, if you want to view each images largely, just click each of the images here, and you'll be linked to the flickr photo and just view the larger size of the photos there, have fun learning the process guys!!! ![]() ![]() i make first a rough sketch on my sketchpad, and create my desired shirt design. ![]() done ![]() ![]() then i darkened the whole lines with a pen, i use a uni .1 water and fade proof pigment ink ![]() ![]() Done, now it's ready to get scanned ![]() ![]() open your scanned file on photoshop ![]() adjust the curves to get the exact tone of darkening the line work ![]() Do the Mike Mitchell's Awesome Linework maker thingy, to let alone the outline stand for itself and delete the white background, get the MM's linework maker here and install it on your photoshop, it helps BIGTIME - link text ![]() test if all the white background is gone by adding another layer and fill it with another colour ![]() you can add another layer and merge it down with the linework layer to rasterize it ![]() ![]() make a negative effect by changing the colour of the linework into white and background into black ![]() then ctrl click the layer of the linework to select all ![]() highlight the background, and click delete to create an etching effect on the background, you can also delete the layer above it, just leave the background there ![]() on the layers box, align to it is paths, go there and click work path ![]() after that you make now export the path you created ![]() open the path on adobe illustrator, select all, and now you see the path you created had points like the ones you see on vectors shapes ![]() fill the selected path with any colour to make it visible ![]() create another rectangular shape, same size as your path ![]() select them all and make a compound path ![]() once you've created it, it will show the linework you have on the screen, you can delete some unwanted shapes and lines too, now you have your linework sketch transformed into a vector work ![]() before i continue vectoring, i usually create a colour guide, so that i can control the colour limits on this one since it's a shirt design ![]() you can continue vectoring, make sure that each colour is assigned to different layer ![]() the colour guide is perfectly helpful, you can also change colour from time to time if you don't feel your first choices ![]() i would like to add some gradients on my design, so on the linework, i made 2 colour combo to create one ![]() i still have to settle on the 8 colour limit, so while making another gradient i just took 1 existing colour and combined it with the another existing colour, which is also a combo on the first gradient i made ![]() after filling all the colours i make another layer for the highlights, the highlight colour is also taken from another existing colour ![]() ![]() ![]() you can also add up some shades, and still use existing colour from your design ![]() done, export the design to photoshop for shirt placement etc... =D ![]() ![]() ![]() |
