I'm gonna show you how to make a detailed sketch transformed into a vector artwork suited for a shirt design =D i would also have to credit Mike Mitchell(a.k.a stickymike) MikeMitchell for his awesome linework maker thingy, it helps a lot when your planning to make detailed linework transform into a linework vector =D

I have here now the complete process, if you want to view each images largely, just click each of the images here, and you'll be linked to the flickr photo and just view the larger size of the photos there, have fun learning the process guys!!!

Swallow The Sun - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever

1
i make first a rough sketch on my sketchpad, and create my
desired shirt design.

2
done

Swallow the Sun sketch

3
then i darkened the whole lines with a pen, i use a uni .1 water and fade proof pigment ink

4 5

6
Done, now it's ready to get scanned

Swallow the sun linework

8
open your scanned file on photoshop

9
adjust the curves to get the exact tone of darkening the
line work

10
Do the Mike Mitchell's Awesome Linework maker thingy, to
let alone the outline stand for itself and delete the white
background, get the MM's linework maker here and install it
on your photoshop, it helps BIGTIME - link text

11
test if all the white background is gone by adding
another layer and fill it with another colour

13
you can add another layer and merge it down with the
linework layer to rasterize it

Swallow the sun

14
make a negative effect by changing the colour of the
linework into white and background into black

15
then ctrl click the layer of the linework to select
all

16
highlight the background, and click delete to create an
etching effect on the background, you can also delete the
layer above it, just leave the background there

17
on the layers box, align to it is paths, go there and
click work path

18
after that you make now export the path you created

19
open the path on adobe illustrator, select all, and now you see the path you created had points like the ones you see on vectors shapes

20
fill the selected path with any colour to make it visible

21
create another rectangular shape, same size as your path

22
select them all and make a compound path

23
once you've created it, it will show the linework you have on the screen, you can delete some unwanted shapes and lines too, now you have your linework sketch transformed into a vector work

24
before i continue vectoring, i usually create a colour
guide, so that i can control the colour limits on this one
since it's a shirt design

25
you can continue vectoring, make sure that each colour is
assigned to different layer

26
the colour guide is perfectly helpful, you can also change colour from time to time if you don't feel your first choices

27
i would like to add some gradients on my design, so on the linework, i made 2 colour combo to create one

28
i still have to settle on the 8 colour limit, so while
making another gradient i just took 1 existing colour and combined it with the another existing colour, which is also a combo on the first gradient i made

29
after filling all the colours i make another layer for the highlights, the highlight colour is also taken from another existing colour

30
31

32
you can also add up some shades, and still use existing
colour from your design

33
done, export the design to photoshop for shirt placement etc... =D

could we see more into the process? the dragon went from pink to full on color. it could help people like me who aspire to do such good work like this on photoshop but have no idea how to do it.

   KDLIG on Aug 20 '08 at 10:08pm
i'm glad you're interested, you just go to this links FLICKR or here MULTIPLY i have explained it all there, btw the color of the dragon was easily change, cuz i made the sketch transform into paths, and now it's like a vectored work where you can just click the selected shapes and change the color anytime

what kind of pen did you use to ink the drawing?
KDLIG
   KDLIG on Aug 20 '08 at 11:05pm
this design is inspired by an ancient chinese belief about solar eclipse , they thought that the sun was swallowed by a dragon, i used a uni .1 water and fade proof pigment ink

Thanks for posting this; I sketch and draw by hand and just downloaded GIMP and INKSCAPE this week to try my hand at this Loves contest. This will help me get my feet wet, for sure. :)
KDLIG
   KDLIG on Aug 21 '08 at 12:13pm
thanks guys! littleclyde - i did the sketch on an afternoon, finished it up by night, then continued digitalizing the process the next day at noon, then finished it up by night, i must say the sketching from pencil to inking was more time consuming than the digital part, since things can be done quick on the computer =D

littleclyde
   littleclyde on Aug 22 '08 at 3:24am
Here's another question for you. I mainly use Photoshop with a tablet to color, which makes adding little shading or lighting details very intuitive, just like using a brush. When you work in Illustrator, do you really draw each little highlight/shadow shape with the pen tool? Or is there a better way?
KDLIG
   KDLIG on Aug 22 '08 at 3:32am
littleclyde - well i always do it by vectoring the highlights and shadows with a pen tool, but if you like using a brush stroke effect like the one you always do on photoshop you can just convert it to paths just like what i did to my sketch here, so that you can open it up on the illustrator program and make them look as if they were done with a pen tool
littleclyde
   littleclyde on Aug 22 '08 at 3:47am
Thanks KDLIG! Yeah, I know I could convert it - I was just wondering how you do it when you work directly in illustrator. I guess it's just a different way of thinking and working - more of a technical process with Illustrator and not as drawing-like, which takes a little bit of the fun out of it for me.

Anyway, great work here, thanks again for putting up your process photos!
