So, I understand a designer telling their friends about a submission and asking for their votes. But recently I've seen countless submissions with a string of comments from people just saying "this is amazing!" " this has to get printed!" etc., from non-picture people who usually turn out to have joined that day and only scored that submission (which is pretty amusing when they make comments such as "the best thing I've seen on threadless!") Sure, give your friend a $5, and maybe I'm just being picky, but it feels so spammy like they're trying to sway people's opinions and it's kind of irritating.

Unless you have about 300-500 friends I dobt you'll change much. Threadless know all the stats about who comments and votes on what, what they buy, when they registered. I imagine it's all taken into account. It's no big deal, threadless encourage you to do it when you submit.

yep..

We will send you an email once we've accepted your submission and then you can start promoting the heck out of it! We'll give you some custom banners to use on your own site and send to your friends via email. Stay tuned!

I dont think it makes that much of a difference honestly, but I see no harm in it either.. plus, it brings more people to threadless, who might then turn around and make purchases on other shirts that otherwise would not have known about the site.

IT doesn't even matter if you tell your friends about it. It will all balance out.

I think it's legit to have your friends vote but just find the comments to be mildly irritating.

i DO hope it's true that Threadless staff has some intricate software or method of monitoring stats on who comments on who...especially "clusters" of comments from the same friends. i mean, it's OK to have your friends comment, but hopefully Threadless can take into consideration the sources, patterns, etc. of the commenters so that whatever conclusions drawn are as fair as possible and not unnaturally inflated results. i too occasionally find "some" types of comments i see annoying

Oh Im sure they track the IP addresses so they know if its the same user with different screennames scoring.

well, i think it is good to have all those comments because putting in a first design to this very harsh site can probably be daunting

but you don't really need magic machines to figure out the comments on subs, if you've been around for a little while you can just tell because the same ppl usually comment on subs and it is noticable when new ppl have something to say

the quality of some of the shirts that get printed is total garbage. this site is anything but harsh. you just need the right idea to catch voters attention and they'll forgive you for not knowing how to design.

actually because they allow you to promote, and on the chance occasion a few of your friends might actually become community members/customers this should be encouraged, and all threadless has to know is the ip address of the commenter, if they see multiples they know they are just duplicate accounts or at the least all within your home/work.

most of the decision making is done by the staff anyways unless it peaks a 3.0 in scoring with many buys

Can you honestly say you wouldn't send your design to everyone you knew, and hope they comment and score it, and wouldn't you do the same for a friend?

I know I would post it on every message board I belong to, my myspace and facebook, and then email it everyone. People at Threadless do the same thing with their designs at other places or contents they enter.

it would feel cheap to win by the strength of your friends and family. i'd rather be judged anonymously by strangers than bully my way through.
