Threadless

I just came back from a shopping trip in Bangkok - and I saw so many shops selling pirated Threadless tees!

They have so many of the latest designs and printed on different colored shirts from the originals, along with some designs that look Threadless-ish but aren't (being a religious refresher of the Threadless catalog, I think I'd pretty much recognize any Threadless shirt off the bat).

The shirts sell for ridiculously cheap prices - about 150baht each (which is about US$2).

Pretty much harmless though. There's too much rampant clothing piracy in Bangkok anyway and the shirts aren't of great quality; they don't have the printed tags on the inside of the back of the tees either.

The whole length of Khaosan Road is a pirated t-shirt stand, dotted with pirated DVD stands.

Actually, when clothes shopping in Bangkok it's nearly impossible to buy something that isn't a brand name knock off. Certainly not on Khaosan Road. If you're backpacking your stuff wears out pretty quickly and you have to replace it at some point. I was just looking at photos and there's a tee I got in Korea that didn't make it past Thailand that I totally forgot about, which is too bad, because it was an original design by a local designer.

Principle??? Pff. Your principles will lead you to the dark side of the force son. Letting multimillion pound/$ companies make even more millions. Support small independant business men thats what I say. That poor bloke in Bankok is just trying to provide a living for his family. I support that. It might be by selling copies but who cares.

Are you kidding? Threadless may be making millions these days, but theyre still by no means some giant heartless corporation. They're still small and independent. And no I wouldnt support some ass making money off stolen designs. This isnt about just stealing from Threadless, theyre stealing from the designers too. I doubt youd be willing to save a few bucks if some schmuck was selling your designs without your persmission.

What would be better would be to buy locally designed and/or made stuff, which you can find in Bangkok, but you have to hunt for it. There were some booths in the Weekend Market that had originally designed tees, of which I bought one, even though it worked out to $20CDN. They might cost more, but that's more money in the "poor bloke"s pocket and then you're truly supporting local industry. The pirated stuff adequately serves only a few people up at the top of a pyramid.

Nonetheless I did buy an "Oakley" shoulder bag in Cambodia, but I didn't have a lot of choice ("Nike" and "Adidas" for example).
