Well, loyal blog readers... (of which there are none, though I'm not about to complain) It's the final countdown! This Friday my show, Spring Awakening, opens to the public.

And you know what? I'm nervous as shit.

Up until last night's rehearsal I thought it was an excellent show, but this was our first tech rehearsal. The director has decided to add some things in that I don't agree with, namely music at the beginning of each act. It would be fine if the music fir the mood of the play, but it doesn't.

For a play containing profound questions about maturity and sexuality, the Director chose "Wouldn't it be nice", by the Beach Boys. Sure, the lyrics match... but honestly, it's too damn happy-go-lucky for the show! The entire cast is in agreement, but nobody has said a thing to him.

"Hey, Mr. Director... I'm just going to criticize your artistic vision and hope you put me in another show someday, okay? Thanks."

Yeah, nobody's liable to say something like that. None of us have the balls.

But hey, if you happen to read this, I have a few questions for you:
1. Have you ever heard of SPring Awakening (in any form)?
2. If so, do you think it's appropriate to perform at a high school?
3. Any advice as to my situation with the director?

Thanks a ton, guys.

1. Yes.

2. Yes.

3. Say something to the director, let him know that everyone is concerned with his decision and you all think it highly inappropriate for the show, which it is...

And omg, I'm so jealous of you getting to be in a production of this.

It is rather mature and provocative for high school.

1. Saw it original cast. LOVE that show.

2. I wish I could say yes, but there are kids who won't be able to handle the sex scene. Are you keeping the sex scene?

3. Somehow that music just feels so... wrong. But I can understand not wanting to be a dick to the director. Are you using it for both acts? Either way, someone has to step up. If it's a high school production, maybe a senior would be the best person to speak up. They have the seniority, and they don't have much time left to be excluded from shows over speaking up against the director.

Chipmnk: I'm not complaining because I don't mind being unknown, that's all.

Noodlegirl: Isn't it just a genius show? Anyway, I play Martha.

BkwrmGfarb: The play is very different from the musical in several ways. The sex between Wendla and Melchior is not consensual, Martha is not a rape victim, etc... the musical added that. But we kept in all the original material, including a beating scene, male kissing, rape, and masturbation.

And you know what?

It's still awesome.

But the director decided to keep the music even after I protested, so that sort of messes it up. Ah well...
