So first and foremost this shirt is banging. And I figure that banging is the kind of word that could mean different things depending on where you live, but to me it means it's awesome. Let's just get that out of the way.

What I really feel the need to bring up today is that threadless is many things. It's kicky. It's fun. It's a t-shirt website. It's not, however, deviantart. Now, don't get me wrong, deviantart is awesome, but deviantart is where you go to postup your crazy kickass artwork. Threadless is where you go to make good t-shirts.

Now at this point, reader, you may be thinking "Well, uhhh...yeah." The point seems pretty simple, right? Apparantly not so. Because for every kickass design like this one there's one where the artist is much less focused on making a good shirt and much more focused on showing everyone how good they are at Adobe Illustrator. And while the artwork may be nice, it really has no place splashed across my torso.

I understand that, as usual, the comments section will most likely be transformed into a fiery river of hate, which is cool, you guys all have your own opinions- just please consider this the next time you buy a Select. And then buy this shirt.

I sort of agree with you...

Some of the designs I've seen subbed lately are really just pretty pictures that someone has decided to slap on a shirt to try and score themselves $2000.

There are some really clever subs that use the shirt as part of the design rather than just something to stick a picture on.

Damn hit post too early. Anyway...

Hopefully with the new printing techniques available and greater colour options we will see more people designing really cool tshirts intead of just fancy pictures.

I'd say I argee -- some "crazy kickass art" shirts are really cool, but a lot of them, they just don't look like t-shirts. In fact, a lot of the time I think they look pretty freakin' weird, just some art in the middle of your chest. The designs really ought to be more than just "a picture what I put on a shirt," they should be "a shirt with images on it," you know?

i like art on my body. and i like Selects. i think a good tshirt should have intricate artwork on it.

but it's a shirt. and people have different clothing styles. so its personal preference in the end.

I appreciate well done work, but I do agree with you. A lot of the recent Selects have been... uh, not worth the extra bucks. I like clever tees, ones that make people smile and me smile when I wear them, more than I like intricate indie-rock line art (which goes for non-select tees as well).

I agree- I rarely like a shirt that is just art- What are really great are shirts that are clever and great looking (see Mother Knows Best, etc.).

Tee-shirts are art. And just like art, the only rule is to express. Art is not exclusive. Art can communicate wondrous things to some and not others. Embrace the diversity. Without diversity there wouldn't be "kicky, banging" tees as well as "crazy kickass artwork" tees. ;)

just don't buy or vote high the shirts you don't like, simple as that.

that's how the system's supposed to work right?

"It's a t-shirt website. It's not, however, deviantart."

Truer words were never spoken that so few have heeded. I fear your revelation will fall on willingly deaf ears however.

yeah i totally agree. almost half the time i'm tempted to buy a shirt and hang it on my wall. because, i mean, it's *really* cool art. it's something i want to look at all the time...how can i enjoy the art if it's on my shirt? but that is just me...as jebbie said, it comes down to personal preference.

beeteedub, this shirt is kickass!!

I came here for the promise that I could buy some shirts with really cool art on them. I love the diversity of the styles I can get. Maybe I want to buy something clever. Maybe I want it to be wall-worthy. I want a shirt where the person who made it is a competent and creative designer.

I don't really dig the shirt above. I don't hate it, but I'm not interested in it.

This is good, though. It means you can buy this shirt. I will buy the most ass-kicking shirt I can find on here. Everyone else will do the same. When we run into each other on the street, we won't be wearing the same damned shirt.

Threadless will always release some shirts by people with great imagination but little or no technical ability. This doesn't mean they are bad shirts or designs - far from it, it just means they've managed to sub something more creative and eyecatching regardless of the fact that there are technically more gifted designs out there.

Well not all selects are bad. I own If It Ain't Metal, almost bought Medusa, and Iconoclast is pretty cool, oh and Cowboys and Indians is fucking genius. But then again, most submissions in general are crap, they just get vetted(mostly) out by the competition.
