So I have my own personal views on the vast (vast) majority of Threadless Select tees. But I'm willing to leave Select out of this, just this once.
So I go to art school, which is fun and challenging and lets me meet interesting people. Some of those people, keeping in an age-old stereotype, decide to overdo it with the hallucinogens. Usually they're nice, if a little on the odd side. They don't tend to dress well, you know, as a group. But I'm pretty sure that any given one of them would have the style, the common sense, the EYES to look at this design and say "well I don't do THAT MANY mushrooms."

I think you're right, art should totally conform to existing visual and conceptual traditions. I also agree that the source of all creativity is hallucinogens.

I have two things to say

first: not about the shirt: I think many artists are very caught up with creating something either different or new and I think art has to be more than just that even if it is a very important part of it.

second: about the shirt: I'm a little (very) sick of shirts with like a defined character and a scene and stuff.....just because he's ugly and his eyes are odd doesn't mean you're thinking outside the box.

Just to clarify (i usually don't respond to any comments unless they really need me to emotionally. the comment's emotion's, not my own) I'm referring to a small group of people at art school. Not everyone at art school. That would kind of make it suck.

I'm sorry, I forgot that art is objective.

stevethegreat, i'm not sure i understand your comment. are you saying that your problem with the shirt is that he's not thinking outside the box?

is outside the box thinking the new benchmark for creating decent art?

also, who says he's ugly? i myself think he's fantastic.

so many people have so many different tastes. who cares if there's a message, if its 'outside the box', if its visually stunning, etc. if enough people find it appealing enough to vote 5$, BAM! you got a printed shirt. for all the people who are upset about what gets printed around here, go print your own shirts that you think are worthy. there will always be great shirts that go un-noticed and 'mediocre' shirts that get printed. thats the competition

Here's a case of another frat boy majoring in art because he thinks it's easy.

Hey!
Stereotyping IS fun!

it's just that every other select seems to be some sort of unconventional character just kinda walkin along whistling dixie and everybody's all "ooooooh this is soooo gooood" which is cool. I'm glad they like it. but I don't. and when I try to say "I don't think I like it because I've seen like six others like it" it's kinda like I'm saying "I don't like good things" which is obviously not what I'm saying. but like I'm under the impression that selects are about doing something really different which is probably wrong I'm always wrong but a simple character isn't really anything different because it's happened so much before and I'm sick of being told I can't dislike something because it's not "pretty" fuck that shit. I like pretty things.

lol @ the thought of drugs being essential to create something visually unconventional.

I, like many other people, have something of a love-hate relationship with the select designs. Often they are completely horrible IMHO, but other times they're the best of the bunch. I don't know that this particular design is either, but I like it, and shall wear it. This happens to meet the "odd-as-fuck" requirement I often hold for shirts I wear. Is it great art? Maybe not. Is it the best tee ever? Probably not. Is it fantastically weird? Yes. And that's good enough for me and my $25.

I have to say thank you for this.

I didn't even give this select a second look. Or even a first one properly.

Becuase of this blog I looked at it and I actually appreciate teh art work. I might even buy it.

So pretty much, thanks.

Seriously I think a good amount of people would defend a picture of a turd on here and say that the person bashing it was stereotyping all turds.

I'm not saying that this is a turd, or that it's badly drawn, it's not. But it's kind of an intentionally ugly looking character not doing anything on a t-shirt. I have tons of those doodled in my notebook when I was bored in class in eighth grade that look exactly like this, why don't I have a select? Whenever a person has the opportunity for a select they can put anything they want on it... the person putting it out there must know that it's not everyone's cup of tea, or that it's not many people's cup of tea. But he put it out there because it wouldn't likely get up there any other way.

I love threadless, but the threadless community needs to stop enjoying the smell of their own farts.
