For me, it's probably "Why We Fight" about the American military-industrial complex. It's one of those movies that it's easy to dismiss as liberal propaganda (I did at first-I'm a neocon) but provokes a lot of intelligent, thoughtful discussion. Of course, it also leads to paranoia about the economic reasoning behind wars.

far_2, you might like The Fog of War.. basically a long interview of Robert McNamara talking about American foreign policy over the last half century, why we did what we did, why we fucked up where we did..

He's a real scoop.

Krull!

no seriously... i watch too many documentaries too name one as the best i've seen, but some i've watched lately that stuck is im toten vinkel(aka hitler's secretary), an inconvenient truth(despite the gore-idolising portrait segments in between the interesting stuff), who killed the electric car and a history channel documentary called the rivals of jesus. fog of war was good too.

I'm addicted to documentaries too. My friends mum doesn't watch a lot of TV, as she thinks that it's all documentaries. The Sopranos was the most recent thing she didn't watch..... how boring would that have been?

i really enjoyed Who Killed the Electric Car, much more than i expected. Two of my favorites are, Vernon, Florida and The Target Shoots First, it's hard to find, but well worth the watch. I just recently watched Been Rich All My Life, about a group of women in their 80's and 90's who've performed in the Cotton Club and alongside Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington and still perfom today...

there was a film a few years ago made by a small operation called "Pixar" about underwater life. I believe it was called Finding Nemo. It puts all of Jacque Cousteau's documentaries to shame.

"American Movie". I don't like watching anything too serious, so this one was perfect for me.

The Coconut Revolution

It's kind of old, but it's a really excellent and exciting documentary. Here's the abstract:
This is the modern-day story of a native peoples’ seemingly impossible victory over Western colonial power. A story of resistance, innovation, ans self-help, and the development of an eco-state.

It's basically about how a foreign power colonized this island full of natives, gave them government, imported workers who became the majority voters, then used those voters to give themselves rights to most of the resources of the island.
It didn't sit well with the natives so they retreated to high mountain forests where they used guerilla tactics to steal weapons and equipment from the colonizers and use it against them (ie. they stole guns and after they ran out of ammo, converted them to crossbows; or stole generators and converted them to run on coconut oil, which they harvested in the mountains).
The eventually drove out the colonizers.
