New Look are a major high street retailer in the UK, I'm very surprised they think they can get away with this.
it's not like they have a small market amongst whom no one has ever heard of threadles!

New Look! How dare they?! I know a buyer for them. I'll have a word!

Down here in Aus, the most ripped off tee making the rounds lately is Funkadelic. I've seen that bad boy on about 5 different shirt colours and as a tee, hoody, and tank top.

Threadless needs to get in there and kick some ass.
jsut out of curiosity - is there a mail address for reporting rip-offs?
i cam across one the other day which had already had a blog about it ages ago, yet the company were still selling it. Makes me wonder if the threadless powers that be see all these blogs pointing these things out?

It won't be New Look as a company that have ripped this off, but an in-house designer or freelancer that has no imagination and no shame (and thinks they can get away with it).

well yeah, i suppose that's what i meant - i'm sure not everyone in NL is aware this is a ripoff, i'm more surprised that whoever works for them and churned it out thinks they'll get away with it. It does reflect badly on the company as a whole though... not that they were ever massively high in my esteem to start with, but still
eskimokiss
   eskimokiss on Oct 19 '09 at 7:50am
here's another rip i came across a minute ago.

while the design hasn't been printed on a tee, the bastard recreated the image down to the exact positioning of the very similar mugs and has used it to promote 12(!!!) cafe's around Prague!!

Threadless should totally have a contact address or a report page for ripoffs like they do for Threadspotting.

ripoff@skinnycorp.com

And a hall of shame gallery.

I think they do. I can't recall what it is, but I know you're to address it to the other festa in the subject line.

I emailed him about some rip offs down here by a very well known, and big clothing company, and haven't received any response. He must have a lot to deal with.

true, but that doesn't mean NL shouldn't be held responsible and the product removed from their shelves.
anyone who they employ represents them as a brand, if the employee cocks up then the company have cocked up

threadless don't own the rights to that one, because its not actually on a tee. but Marco (Ivejustquitsmoking) certainly does because its his design! someone should inform him

threadless owns rights only for t-shirts and prints. You as the designer still own the rights for any other use - on mugs, stickers, underwear, whatever else you can think of. I think that's what he meant.
brentendo
brentendo on Oct 19 '09 at 8:49am
oh and charity.ryan I just meant that threadless only own the rights to put the designs on tshirts, the artists still keep the rights to the designs which is cool. but yeah it means that in the case of the owl design, the guy isnt technically stealing from threadless hes stealing from the designer Marco lol
brentendo
brentendo on Oct 19 '09 at 8:50am
haha yeah that :) though I still think marco should get in touch with the designer and sue his ass
trindli
trindli on Oct 19 '09 at 8:50am
wow, the owl one is pretty bad, it's a one-to one copy..

i reported a rip off of one of leons shirts once, i never got an answer but the next time i passed the store it was gone..
charity.ryan
charity.ryan on Oct 19 '09 at 8:53am
Ohhhh, I thought they bought all printing rights to the design--meaning that even the artist gives up the rights.
celandinestern

I hate it that people think design is not property. People are so casual in downright theft. for each one of these we find, there must be hundreds that are never discovered.

I pulled this from the TL Legal Terms:

If your Design is selected for use by Threadless.com, you acknowledge that you assign to skinnyCorp LLC and its subsidiaries and affiliates (hereinafter collectively "Threadless.com") the entire right, title, and interest in and to the copyright in your Design including the right to sue for past infringement and the right to further sublicense the Design, for its sole and exclusive use on and in connection with the Items. You also acknowledge that you waive all "moral" rights that you may have in and to your Design.
If your Design is selected, you may not use the Design (or derivatives of the Design) or allow others to use the Design (or derivatives of the Design) on any Items, as described above.

This sounds pretty serious to me, like Marco can't even use the design anymore.
eskimokiss
   eskimokiss on Oct 19 '09 at 9:08am
They must have changed the fine print, because i'm pretty sure it's always been understood that threadless only hold the rights to print the design on clothing (and also as a print) while the designer can print it on anything else.
brentendo
brentendo on Oct 19 '09 at 9:12am
you may not use the Design (or derivatives of the Design) or allow others to use the Design (or derivatives of the Design) on any Items, as described above.

I think theres a section just above that details what items threadless is buying the rights for.
brentendo
brentendo on Oct 19 '09 at 9:14am
By selecting "I Agree" below and in consideration of Threadless.com evaluating your Design (hereinafter the "Design") for its possible use on clothing and wall graphics (the "Items"), you agree to the following terms and conditions ("Design Submission Terms and Conditions"):

yeah its right at the top, they just buy the rights to use it on a tshirt or for Blik wall graphics :)

if I had a job as as sweet as being an in-house designer for a clothing co. the LEAST i would do is come up with my own ideas.
I actually see a lot of designs in places like new-look or topman, which are, even if not straight rip-offs, very derivative of threadless designs
charity.ryan
charity.ryan on Oct 19 '09 at 9:21am
Ow, my head...:) Well, all I know is someone owns the rights and someone else needs to be sued.
Bramish
   Bramish on Oct 19 '09 at 9:33am
It's pretty dumb that a designer for one big t-shirt seller would rip off another company. You'd think the in-house designer for high street t-shirts would at least realise that he/she is not the only person in the design industry in England to be familiar with Threadless.

I think with Bone Idol it might be a tough call since it's just a big skull - despite its obvious similarities, I'm not the only person to have put a skull on a shirt. I'd be prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt if they hadn't so blatantly ripped off that bubblegum bird from Threadless as well.

also on the subject of ripoffs, I was out at a club the other night wearing The Morning After ( the one with the clown puking a rainbow into a toilet for those who don't know), and as I was walking through the club I bumped into some guy wearing an exact copy of it just on navy with a logo underneath it. He looked at me like wtfff, and I ended up chatting to him about how I had the original and he was wearing a cheap ripoff, he was so gutted haha
