So we got American comics here in Oz, but never could take part in these kind of childhood ad campaigns... did the stuff you get actually turn out to be as good as drawn on the back of Archie? Or was it just rubbish?

I knew one guy who tried to sell boxes of something or another to earn fabulous prizes, it was probably the one on the back of Boy's Life or some such. I don't think he ever got very far with it as nobody wanted to buy what he was selling.
