The Morning Benders

They're good friends of mine. They're all really young guys (I felt bad for julian, the drummer, he wasn't allowed in some clubs that they try to play at). I hung out with them at SXSW, and I think they have a really good chance of getting big, especially since they're touring with The Kooks

The Kooks are already huge in Europe from what I understand. Look for em in America this summer.

Oh, The Kooks are not a band to watch this year. They're a band to remember how good their first album was and how really disappointing Konk is. But if you haven't given Inside Out / Inside In a good listen, you definitely should. I believe it was the best-selling record of 2006 in the UK.

Yeah. I agree. America is slow on the uptake though. They need a bit of help to finally get back to Inside out

The Kooks are massive in the uk. I think they are OK.

@ wotto, they are not my favorite band, for sure, however, they do have a lot of potential I think, to gain momentum in the US.

Sir Huzzah on May 07 '08 at 11:28am
Not me unfortunatley. The band are really local to me, some of my friends even attend the same music college as them.

My problem with them is they're nothing new, they're just joining the bandwagon of generic Brit indie bands, they'll soon be replaced when another clone band pops up.

martiandrivein on May 07 '08 at 11:39am
@ Sir Huzzah, that's totally cool. Like I said, they're not my favs, but they have a really good promotional group over here, and I think that'll get em big over here.
Sir Huzzah
Sir Huzzah on May 07 '08 at 11:54am
I completely agree, because I live in the UK it's easy to come across these types of bands all the time, whereas only the really successful ones usually make it in the US.

I guess the reverse could be said aswell, I presume there are hundreds of bands like paramore in the US, but only paramore have been sucessful over here recently.

I do like Brit indie bands for their occasional catchy songs and have nothing against their fans, just I don't see the point in being a major fan, as they'll soon be replaced. The one band that does stand out to me however is probably the Arctic Monkeys, I think they've got abit more kick, and they're songs are of consistent quality.
martiandrivein
martiandrivein on May 07 '08 at 12:00pm
Arctic monkeys are cool. Bloc Party is cool. I miss Test Icicles quite a bit.
Sir Huzzah
Sir Huzzah on May 07 '08 at 12:05pm
Yeah Bloc Party are good, I dunno if it's available in the US, but they released a Silent Alarm Remixed album, which is pretty good.

The Foals and The Wombats seem to be really popular here at the moment, is there the same hype in the US?
martiandrivein
martiandrivein on May 07 '08 at 12:07pm
No, I've never met anyone else that listens to them even. I'm only partially familiar with them.

Also The remixed album is sweet. Priscilla (ValorandVellum) I think likes that album too.

Oh right wicked, I'm sort of in the same boat I don't follow UK indie much, I just pick up on the hits they repeatedly play on the radio. I'm more in touch with the electronic genre's really, french house/electro/DnB, and that's more worldwide than just the UK.

@ Shakethesheets, yeh I think making it in the US is abit hit'n'miss; did a band called Kasabian ever make it to the US? I quite like the band.
martiandrivein
martiandrivein on May 07 '08 at 12:21pm
Kasabian is around yeah, I have listened to them.

@ Sir, I'm really into french electro as of late. You want to suggest some bands/groups to me?
shakethesheets
shakethesheets on May 07 '08 at 12:28pm
I never understood why The Fratellis didn't become more popular here - people just knew the one song from the iPod commercial - but they've got an album-full of up-beat, catchy, possible singles. Maybe their next album will get better hype here but I fear it'll be at least a bit of a letdown.

The Last Shadow Puppets could very well catch on, hopefully lacking the teenage Beatlemania that surround Arctic Monkeys. (I love Arctic Monkeys, it's just not fun seeing them at an all-ages show.) If Black Kids don't wait much longer before putting out a full-length, I could see them doing pretty well. Other bands Americans should know and love: The Pigeon Detectives, Good Shoes, and to a lesser extent, The Young Knives. I saw Pigeon Detectives play a packed house at a little place with sub-150 capacity, which was a ton of fun, but they deserve better support than that. I hope they find it.

Oh yeh Les Rythmes Digitales, dunno if they come under electro, and not much has been heard of them recently, but their album darkdancer is pretty good, and quite a few of their tracks are featured on commercials.

Here you go, a bunch of currently popular indie bands:

Maccabees
The Twang
The Enemy
Babyshambles
Air Traffic
The Cribs
Mystery Jets
Hoosiers
Jack Penate
Jamie T

Hope that helps!

Thanks... Not a big fan of The Twang, I think I prefer The Enemy but I haven't really gotten into either. Babyshambles I enjoy, but I still haven't got Shotter's Nation. I should do that... I got kind of sick of The Cribs because they seem to have such an attitude of not actually caring about their music, but I admit I do really like a few of their songs... Jack Penate and Jamie T are a little girly for me... I've heard of the Mystery Jets but don't know them or the others you mentioned, so I'll definitely check them out. Thanks!

Sir Huzzah on May 07 '08 at 1:23pm
Haha, in all fairness I know very little about some of the bands above, I just have alot of mates who listen to them. But I do like the Maccabees, and the Hoosiers have had a few hits. But a smashing track by Air Traffic is Charlotte, you're bound to like it; some of their tracks after that though went abit... Keane.

I saw pigeon Detectives support the Holloways 2 years ago at Koko, and it was the first time I saw them. It was an awesome performance, and I knew they were going to do well. And they ruddy did.

Ah, alright.

To go back to the original post, here's an excerpt from NME's review of Konk, which is pretty much exactly what I said when I first heard it:

Perhaps those 1.5million album sales went to their head after all. It’s certainly affected their judgement. Pritchard previously claimed they had over 80 songs written for the new album. Eighty songs? And they chose these?

They gave it a 5/10... I probably would have given it a 6. I have live versions of some of these 80 songs that they didn't put on it and they're quality songs... And the ones that they went with were better before they were put on the album. Every b-side they've ever put out is bound to be better than a number of songs on Konk. It'll probably grow on me a bit, but man... What a disappointment.
fatheed

The first 4 songs on the Kooks new albums are the strongest. All in all not too shabby. Their first song 'Naive'...

was filmed in Nambucca on Holloway Road and Kid Harpoon is playing in the background. Nambucca is like the spiritual home of a bunch of bands from Camden/Holloway area including Vinvent Vincent and The Villians, The Holloways, and my buddy's band, Captain Black.

PS: Kid Harpoon is a genuine rising star! And check out Nambucca.

I just checked out Glasvegas phones, the vocalist has a really strong accent, don't come across that too often, the Fratellis are Scottish yet I couldn't tell from their singing. I checked out Kid Harpoon aswell, he has some good stuff on his myspace.
