Had nothing to do during the day yesterday, so I decided to break out the ol' video camera and shoot something. It's just an experimental short, and doesn't have a "solid storyline" or "message".

Let me know what you think of it!

ha, cool.

Reminds me of the first and last time I was high.

What's the music from?

Malcolm Man

I really liked the giraffe shot.
Jewstice
Jewstice on Jul 27 '08 at 1:31pm
The music is actually Fantomas. I didn't really have anything else that seemed to fit, and when that happens, Fantomas can usually get the job done.

But yeah, I have a "film group", but our last shoot went terribly and we didn't get anything finished. I just felt like getting at least one project done this summer.

Have you had any time to shoot this summer?

Not aside from work dude.

You can check me site if you want to take a gander at the awful crap I've been pumping out these days.

Not bad for advertisements and commercials. I love the Ferndale/Eureka area though, so I don't mind watching the ones from places around there.
Malcolm Man

I didn't know you had ever been up here.

I'm not going to lie I didnt like it, but there was never gonna be a big chance that I would. I hate experimental film so I guess the best thing I can say about it is it fits in well with other experiemental films.

I was wondering though are you the same jewstice on vimeo with the time lapse driving around chicago? that was awesome.

I think you may be making to broad of a statement there Stubby. I used to be in the same boat as yourself.
There actually are so really good ones out there.

Someday you'll be converted.
Jewstice
Jewstice on Jul 27 '08 at 1:52pm
Not the same one, but thank you for the honest input.

Malcolm: I haven't been up there in a few years, but I just love the entire Humboldt area. I've been contemplating moving out to Eureka in the next few years or so.
Malcolm Man
Malcolm Man on Jul 27 '08 at 1:55pm
Well, unless you reeeeeeeeeeeealllly like the scenery or something; I wouldn't advise it. The film community up here is dead. Basically, me and one other guy comprise the whole of the Humboldt film commitee.
Malcolm Man
Malcolm Man on Jul 27 '08 at 1:55pm
It is really beautiful up here though. It wouldn't be a bad place to come up just to make a film or something.
Jewstice
Jewstice on Jul 27 '08 at 1:58pm
Hah, I really do like the scenery though!

I've also heard that permit shooting up there isn't bad either. Around $100 a day or something like that.... I could be completely wrong here though...
Malcolm Man
Malcolm Man on Jul 27 '08 at 2:01pm
I have never acquired a permit. No one fucking cares.

I'm not saying experimental film doesnt have a place, it should be considered art, its on the same level of certain types of theatre.

My main problem with them is that you have to have a certain level of education about the genre to even try and understand it and I'm not interested in that.

I want things that are accessable, something that everyone can understand not hidden by obscure images and meanings. I dont want media to be liked by everyone, I think its good if people like or dislike something and each piece should evoke different thoughts and feelings but I want people to understand how we got from point A to point B.

A strong narrative showing the emoitional development of its protagonists will always be more powerful than a collection of images you need a guide book to translate because it gets straight to the point and is able to touch you on an emotional level and I dont think experimental film can do that.

Sorry Jewstice, I was harsh your film is well shot and I like the effects you've used but thats about as much apprication for the form I can muster.

"My main problem with them is that you have to have a certain level of education about the genre to even try and understand it and I'm not interested in that."

Not completely true. some experimental films are just pure emotional manifestations with no particular meaning at all. The artists is just inviting you to experience that one particular feeling; or experience it in whatever way you may interpret the film.
Malcolm Man
Malcolm Man on Jul 27 '08 at 2:09pm
You don't have to be sorry. You weren't harsh either. You have obligation to like a film.
stubby43
stubby43 on Jul 27 '08 at 2:13pm
Maybe thats true but because experiemental films arent popular it means you have to put a certain level of effort into learning about the genre, who the good directors are so in a sense you already have a certain level of education around the subject.

Jewstice
Jewstice on Jul 27 '08 at 2:15pm
Yeah, no need to apologize. Criticism is always good, and I actually prefer people to tell me how they actually feel about my stuff. No harsh feelings man.

P.S that was to the first response.

You know its funny, I'm studying a degree in film and tv, I make films with my friends but I dont really see myself as a film maker I'm more interested in the buisness side of things.

That is a pretty cool video Malcolm.

I just recently picked up a dvd set of Avant Garde: Experimental Films of the 1920's and 1930's and it has some amazing stuff on it.

Malcolm, its well shot but honnestly? I think I'm too used to thinking in narratives, I could accept that if it were part of a film because there'd be some sort of explanation maybe not straight after it, hell it could take the entire film but thered be one and I'd find that alot more satisfying.

I just sat there watching waiting for it to start.

I dont think I'm the type of person that can enjoy experimental film because I just dont get it.
Malcolm Man
Malcolm Man on Jul 27 '08 at 2:27pm
Mmmmmmmmm...Different minds I guess. Don't get me wrong, I love a good character driven narrative, but I guess there's a part of my brain that likes to feel a movie on purely an emotional basis. It's kind of a self indulgent thing really.

I don't know if I'm making sense.

I guess I'm an art fag as well, as I am actually more into the experimental side of things than the narrative side....

Anyways, its been good hearing from both of you on the subject, but I gotta get going.

Take it easy.
stubby43
stubby43 on Jul 27 '08 at 2:33pm
Malcolm thats good, film wouldnt be what it is today without 'art fags' because your the ones focused on the story and on the film making. I'm way better at the buisness side of things I'm not really that concerned about whats being produced as long as I get it and like it.

Thats not to say I dont have anything I want to write, I do and I think it would be pretty terrible if everyone on the busisness side wasnt interested in good story telling because film making would become just a method of making money and I like to believe that its more than just profit that people are trying to produce something meaningful.
