My 10 year old keeps asking me about this "gesture"

What the heck do I say?!?!

He's starting to ask my friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors in public. He's even emulating this "gesture"with his little fingers and wiggling this index finger. He's been doing it in school and I've gotten two letters from his teacher.

Keep in mind he just turned 10.

tell him the truth, or something else, but just tell him something, other wise he will feel it is something important and wont stop asking about it....
you could say it's a symbol for putting a wedding ring on a girls finger.... very romantic and adult stuff....

don't lie to kids.
You're the one who exposed him to the gesture in the first place, so you have a responsibility to tell him what it is.

That's what happens when you hang the picture in your bathroom.

Or did you not notice in your 10 years of parenting that kids tend to emulate what they see?

when my kids ask about stuff like that, i usually tell them that it's a rude gesture that i'll explain to them when they get older. i also tell them not to do it in public because it is not appropriate. i hope they listen.

I am only 23, and have no kids, so I'm certainly not be the best person to advice you about that.
But telling a kid something is rude or inappropriate, might make it even more interesting or funny for him to use. or am I totally wrong.

i think the same way yelle, and also, if he's doing this all over the place i am extremely surprised one of his friends hasn't explained it to him yet. maybe he already knows what it means and is just putting you on

Just tell him it's that riddle/joke where you say "I bet you can't poke your head through a hole this small" and then you make the pointer finger with your other hand and "poke" yourself in the head through the hole...
The joke is funnier if you use a giant dildo instead of a pointer finger.

haha i guess it's all in the delivery. i'm lucky i have pretty great kids, so far. you may think i'm biased, but, if you spent time with them, you'd believe me. :p

My mom almost never punished me for anything and nothing was really forbidden to me, but I was just to scared to disappoint her to do anything bad.

This situation could only be more full of fail if you walked around the house all day saying "fuck" every other word and then got all freaked out because your kid was saying it and asking what it meant at school.

And I agree with ofthecoast, the only way to deal with this is to be straight up with him and use this as your lead in for The Talk. He's ten. He's going to find out what this means from his buddies and then he's going to be wondering why sticking his peener in a girl's hole is so cool that mommy would put a poster about it on the bathroom wall.

Of course, then you're going to have to explain why it's okay for you to have a gigantic colourful poster about it on the bathroom wall, but he can't go around making this gesture in the school yard.

does it literally mean a finger in the pooper?? i thought it was just run-o-the-mill, penis in the vagina sex. now i realize that you're going to have to tell your 10-year old that grown-ups are still debating the exact meaning of the gesture, but here are some cool possibilities... blah blah blah... maybe even encourage him to come up with his own interpretation! fun!
