I remember the aliens that disappeared in a puff of smoke when the old guy hit them with his cane/umbrella

saw it in a history of animation class

I remember seeing it YEARS ago in a film class, and then flipping out when Smashing Pumpkins did a very similar video. Of course, that was a trend; Rob Zombie did a "Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" video, and somebody ripped off (sorry, "paid tribute to") "Un Chien Andalou."

Oh man, if somebody made an UCA t-shirt, I'd die of shock and pleasure. If you haven't seen it, young people, track it down. You'll be, uh... surprised? Is surprised the right word?

One of the other really old films we saw in the history of animation class was about a guy (Windsor McKay?) who would write words on a big piece of paper and then the words would "magically" turn into what the word was... for instance he'd write the word "man" and lines would appear to form a picture of a man ... the "m" would be his ear, etc. He did "dog", "lady", etc....

Then the guy wrote "coon" on the paper and ... yeah...

...aaaaawwwwkkkkwaaaaarrrrrddd...

there were a few uncomfortable throat-clearings in the classroom...

Ooh, here is un chien andalou online:

Eyeball-slicing, severed-hand, cross-dressing-nuns-on-bicycles, ants-in-your-palms goodness. I never realized both actors committed suicide.
