Knock me out!
I'm trying to think of a present for my friend, I want to get him a book or a dvd (or maybe one of each if they're cheap enough). Amelie is my favourite movie but I'm sure he's definitely seen it already, if not owns it already.
I was thinking something along the lines of Annie Hall/Wes Anderson or something but if you have Amelie-related suggestions they would be lovingly taken to heart.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet who directed Amelie has also directed "La cité des enfants perdus" and "delicatessen" (sorry i just know the french names). They are both greath movies. Jeunet worked on them with Marc Caro.

I HATE Annie Hall.

Have you seen the Science of Sleep?

Ooh, I've never seen Happenstance, thanks!

I thought The City of Lost Children was supposed to be a bit dark? Maybe I'm getting confused. Thanks for the suggestions! :)

Oh no, I love Annie Hall! But I figure it's kind of a love-hate thing (obviously) so it might be a bit of a risky present. Plus it's kind of sad.

I did see the Science of Sleep, I wasn't mad about it though, I thought I'd like it a lot more although it looked great.

Yes "the city of lost children" is a bit dark it's true :)...and so as Delicatessen but in this one you can find the same atmosphere than in Amelie Poulain, this old fashionned style (france of 50's sometimes).

I have a love-hate thing with Garden State...firstly I LOVE Peter Sarsgaard's voice (I don't know why, I just do) but I find the film really pretentious and contentious...but sometimes, that's exactly what I want, because it's still very nice. It makes no sense!

Thanks for the suggestions jzef! I think I'll check them out myself, even if I don't give them to my friend :)

Strange question but are you French?

Amelie is a lot like Amelie. I say you give Amelie a chance.

yes and i wonder how american see France through movies like Amelie or La vie en rose because it's not at all like in these movies which seems to work very well in USA :D

Hahahahaha.....I doubt most Americans watch French movies, jzef.

I haven't seen Amelie in a while, and I'm not quite sure what it's "like." So I suggest Tommy Boy. 'Cause I'm watching it right now, and it rules.

i dont think it matters that amile is a french movie, its got a look and feel thats unique in general, maybe in language and setting even the most insulting things sound better in french hehe

You could always go with "A Very Long Engagement." Same director, a lot of the same actors, but not dark. Although I didn't think "City of Lost Children" was dark at all, and it was very funny, too....so either of those? I haven't seen "Delicatessen," so I can't do an opinion on that.
