Threadless

Doktag aka is a 25.21 year old boy, has been a member since August 17, 2006, has scored 121 submissions, giving an average score of 2.60, helping 4 designs get printed.
The other day I was in a shopping centre and came across a design in one of the display windows of a popular Australian clothing chain that looks like an exact copy of the "For The Birds" t-shirt.

As active and loving participant of this great community, I feel it is my duty to let this sham be known.

It's kind of annoying that you are using this just to plug your blog.

who fucking cares....i cant believe you wrote a whole article about it on your blog.

It's because it's a Travis design. Everyone loves Travis.

sportsgirl huh, why does that not surprise me.
Doktag
Doktag on Aug 21 '06 at 10:47am
It's not about plugging my own blog. I gave a basic outline of what happened, and gave people the option to go to the article I wrote for the full story.

The article I wrote was quite big, so I wasn't going to bore people by pasting the whole thing here.
bananaphone
   bananaphone on Aug 21 '06 at 10:48am
well they dont have to read the blog either, but whatever.
MoniqueH
MoniqueH on Aug 21 '06 at 10:50am
He doesn't even link to his stp link so I don't care.
Doktag
Doktag on Aug 21 '06 at 10:51am
@bananaphone

Exactly, which is why I gave them the link. The option is there.

What is wrong with promoting a story that you wrote that you think other people might find interesting? I'm not asking you to become avid readers of my blog and sign up as members. You click the link if you want to, you read the article if you want to.

The most ironic part was when the girl working the register came out and told me, “I know it looks really pretty, but I can’t allow you to take photos of it. It’s actually illegal.”

^ woops there was an lol after that. I keep forgetting arrows don't work on Threadless. I can't decide if women are more romantic or men even after reading that.

Wow, that's not cool. If Sportsgirl had this image first and then somebody submitted it on Threadless, everyone would get so angry and say things like "STOLEN! ZERO! COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT IS NOT COOL!"

And they'd be right.

AsStarsGoOut: Seriously, snide remarks like that are unnecessary.

I guarantee you if it was a more frequent Threadless member that posted this (let's say, for little g for example) people would be like, "OMG Good find!"

Seriously, this is the first time I've seen a blogger get snapped at for making a blog about finding a jacked design. Every other time it was "good work" and high-fives all around.

I actually already did before I posted this, but thatnks anyway. :)

I only posted it because I thought SOME people might find it interesting and create discussion, but all it's seemed to have done was make me the target of a one-way flame war.

Haha, :P

Put it this way: I suck at drawing, so I write. That's why you won't see many design submissions from me. And at least it means you're actually reading other stuff on the website :P

interesting. i think whoever did that didn't think that threadless was a very big company. that, or, they are planning on selling threadless shirts soon...

thats pretty cheeky. And that I heart new york sticker looks exceedingly like the honest tee design! The rascals! :-)
Doktag

@chelly

Yeah, and the flash on the camera actually made the colour on the birds a bit lighter.

My friend compared For The Birds to the "kissing birds" picture on the Sportsgirl website, and said the colours were identical within 1 hex value.

A lot of people replied with "who cares" to this blog. I'd just like to let you know that Threadless cares (you know, that site that you buy those t-shirts off?) - they sent me a $5 coupon for spotting this and letting them know.
angelito
angelito on Aug 25 '06 at 1:10am
Dude good spotting. It's not right for people's designs to get ripped off, and good on you for speaking up about it. I don't get why people are giving you shit.

Anyway...
Jenna Lupey
Jenna Lupey on Aug 25 '06 at 1:10am
wow that really sucks because that's such a rip off and i do care because i have that shirt, and i really love threadless.

in fact i'm wearing it right now.
timrb
   timrb on Aug 25 '06 at 2:31am
Yeah, I don't know why you're getting flak about this. Good spot. And it pretty clearly looks like a rip-off to me, since there ARE minor differences (see the lines on the birds' wings). If it were legit, they would just have used original design.

eskimokiss
   eskimokiss on Aug 25 '06 at 5:19am
My take on what may have happened (based on what has happened in the past to designiskinky.net):

A designer had a deadline. needed to fulfill a brief. was rushed for time. scoured the net(or was already aware of threadless and may even be a blogger/submitter). and thought "no one in oz would recognise this.. fuck it..i'll change it ever so slightly"

This happened to designiskinky.net about 2 years ago. Jay Jays Jeans Warehouse were selling a tee with the sammy the squirel logo on it. Someone even tracked down the designer and they admitted to being rushed to get the design in on time and thought nobody would notice.

serenityoz on Aug 25 '06 at 7:55am
Thanks for posting about this.

I dont know why people dont care as much about this compared to other thefts of threadless designs, or by other threadless users in the past.

And I think it could be possible to come up with the same idea, but not the same colors as well. So theft.

eskimokiss describes those circumstances a little too well. so how much did sportsgirl pay you for that design paz?

it's not just a decal they bought from blik or something is it?

Definitely a good find, OP. I'm curious to know what Threadless plans on doing about it now.

I'm thinking at the least a cease & desist letter should be sent to that store chain, unless Threadless wants to strike a deal with them, which would be ideal but might involve a bit of legal work first (including proving copyright infringement).
