So I bought this shirt. I get both the references. But I can't speak french for shite. How would one pronounce the text on the shirt?

"Ceci n'est pas une pipe."

While we're at it, is the painter René Magritte pronouced "Ren-ay Ma-greet"?

Thanks for any help you may give, and apologies for my ignorance.

Steve pretty much got it, ' cept that the "pipe" part is pronounced, "peep." I would write it:

suh-see nay pah oon peep

suh-see nay pahz oon peep.

You do pronounce the s in pas because it's in front of a word starting with a vowel.

I wouldn't say peep, more like pip (kinda like hip, but with a p)

also, yes you pronounce the s, but it's more like a z

It's absolutely pronounced peep, not pip, please don't say pip. And as for the 'une' being pronounced 'oon', that's still not quite right, let me see, it's more like ew-n as in "ew, that's gross". So, the 'ew' ends with an 'n' sound. Does that help?

I hope you are kidding, but in case you aren't:

Also, the "pip" "peep" thing depends on your accent. Quebec vs France, etc.

seh see ne pazoon peep

(light on the pazoon 'n', say "ne" like "we are the knights of ni" say ni, except with an eh sound)

For anyone who doesn't know, the translation is "This is not a pipe" because it isn't a pipe, it's a picture of a pipe.
