This is directed toward the girls, but any guys with advice, feel free to chime in:

What's the best way to "comfortize" a pair of pain-inducing shoes? The shoes in question are all flats or low heels/wedges, so height isn't the problem - the stiff backs and sides dig in, and I end up with blisters on the back of my heel and top of my toes. I've tried those cushiony pads that stick onto the back of your shoes, which help a little with the heel part, but not the top or sides.

I do want to wear the shoes I already have, but if there's no satisfactory way to make those comfortable, what brand of shoes (not sneakers) is really comfortable right out of the box? I'd need to be able to walk about two miles in them every day.

they have ones for heels too... gel pads for the back of shoes..

I wear Nike Air Rifts... they are the most comfortable thing ever..

thanks steve! i have gel insoles and they do help a LOT with overall comfort..but they do nothing to stop the back of the shoe from digging in.

mela and emily, i wish i could wear shoes like that, but i'm not allowed to wear sneakers or casual sandals to work. the sole of my most comfortable pair of boots broke off today, so i'm planning ahead for monday!

steve, steve - that does not help my shoe situation. i won't tell you my name even though it's ALL OVER THIS SITE!

mela...i was looking at your comment for the longest time, thinking, "her, her...who? who do i have to be to get comfortable shoes!?" then i realized it was a typo. is the shoe place you're talking about not available in the u.s. at all?

i'd say wear them around the house w/ some thick socks to try and stretch them out a bit

otherwise you'll just have to try some different shoes i think

it's okay, stevethecreepy. at least you're a good detective!

WOW herky...you're brilliant! that's it, no more replies needed - problem solved, case closed. tape cotton balls to your feet, everyone!
scenerie
   scenerie on Mar 10 '07 at 12:06am
yeah chelly, i think stretching them out and breaking 'em in over time is the best bet... i'm just impatient!

chelly on Mar 10 '07 at 12:08am
stretching them while wearing socks shouldn't take tooo long. or work them with your hands (like you would a baseball mit). or just toss some invisible bandaides on your heels so that when it rubs it doesn't take off skin, to buy time until they are broken in.

chelly, i'm wearing two pairs of socks and my shoes as i type this! ow, they're so tight. the band-aid thing is also a really good idea. it might even beat herky's cotton balls...maybe.

the cotton balls are just meant to be a temporary solution, until the shoes naturally break-in of course (you can stuff them along the side and back and it's hardly noticeable, I've seen it done before) :)

hah, herky, i thought you were completely joking! i wonder how i'd keep the cotton balls in place.

Buy shoes a size bigger. Works for me. Flats shouldn't do that to your feet :/

you'd just have to be careful when removing your shoes
scenerie
   scenerie on Mar 10 '07 at 12:51am
yion, that sounds like a good idea but i do already buy the biggest size i can that don't fall off my feet - and actually, one pair of flats i wore the other day kept slipping off while i was walking to work. what brand of flats do you have?

herky - too bad i like to kick off my shoes at work. :) i'd probably have to tape them to the inside of the shoe!

Maybe it is because all of mine are cloth. (I mean they have rubber soles, but the rest of the shoe is not leather or anything. Ugh I am not making any senssseeeeeeeeee
scenerie
   scenerie on Mar 10 '07 at 12:56am
no, i understand what you're saying...and that must be it, because my shoes are all on the stiffer side - leather and such. i'm going for cloth flats next time!

Target has cute ones and Keds makes great ones. Not dorky old lady keds, there are cool ones for younger people :)
scenerie
   scenerie on Mar 10 '07 at 1:02am
ooh, i like the keds with artist patterns on them...are those what you're talking about? i don't know if i'd be able to get away with wearing those to work though.

one of the pairs of shoes i'm trying to break in right now are from target! they're not cloth, and they're not comfy yet...

yion072 on Mar 10 '07 at 1:05am
I haven't seen those. Kohls and macys have keds that are work-appropriate!
