Hey, I am all about cute polar bears. But I don't see this as being better than the thousands of other shirts I have seen that didn't get printed. What am I missing?

I guess it's a winner because it's a simple concept and an effective illustration. I'm definitely not bashing it. I'm just surprised that this shirt has been printed *twice* now. I guess it's pretty popular.

Anyone else think it kind of looks like a sweat stain on a gray shirt?

I never saw the appeal of this shirt either.

I think it's been printed more than twice. I don't really like it either.

What's "wicked" about a floating polar bear?

it's a simple illustration that doesnt try too hard. it's not a lame joke. it has longevity. it is iconic. it is wicked!

i agree with tesco. a design doesn't need to be overwhelmingly complicated with huge layers of subtext and irony smoothed over by abstract (emo) art in order to be worthy.

sure it's simple, but you've never heard the expression "less is more"?

sometimes i miss the old days and i wasn't even around since the beginning (which is perhaps why i'm not around as much anymore). new threadless is great. but you've gotta give old threadless it's dues.

(omg, i sound like my mom giving a lecture)

The thing is, a floating polar bear is not entirely unnatural. Their hollow hairs make them adaptable to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. They like swimming...in liquid water of any temperature. It's a cool idea, but...not really worth a Threadless shirt.

It just looks like something my mom would wear, like something you would buy at the zoo.

it's a floating effing polar bear. not for me. maybe if it was peeing. maybe.

Seriously, I don't think this shirt SAYS anything. Not even this "joke" everyone seems to think is there.

Polar bears can swim. That's what this one is doing. What's so special about that?

Aaron Brown on Nov 22 '06 at 9:39pm
oh i get it now. . . global warming. . . bears got no place to go except swim. sad. i still think it should be peeing.

wow. with the word pollution in the title, you'd think people could easily put two and two together. the lack of intelligence, awareness, and care of our environment displayed in most of the above comments is just sad. You guys need to put down your ipods, read a newspaper (or anything other than text messages), and care more about whats going on than like OMG' WHOSE LIKE PARTY YOURE GOING TO THIS WEEKEND. its a great shirt. its simple, which is obviously still to complicated for most of you, and it raises awareness.

it is too complicated, and so is your intellect - you need to dumb down a bit - you also need to lay off the asshole juice

pumped up, what the blog-boozers are trying to say is that you can't generalize that an entire community doesn't know anything about environmental problems just because you do. Especially when you deliver such a treatise in such a condescending tone.

Unfortunately it won't "raise awareness" because if you're not already aware of the problem, you'll just see it as a polar bear taking a swim.

i like to drive an awesome hummer limo while eating hamburgers in unbiodegradable containers while simultaneously clubbing baby seals...

you should try
J-Ray
J-Ray on May 04 '07 at 3:44am
Brandon, you should just drive right over the baby seals. It lowers your MPG, but that's no big deal!

rain_cloud
rain_cloud on May 04 '07 at 9:04am
Yea, it definitely alludes to global warming. The reason why it's so popular is precisely because of what J-Ray said, which is that if you're not already aware of the global warming problem, you'll just see it as a polar bear taking a swim. This is agreeing with previous posts stating that it is popular because of its simplicity, the message is subtle such that you wouldn't be turned off simply because you didn't "get it."

I got the shirt for my friend because his nickname means "polar bear" in English.
Otherwise the shirt doesn't do anything for me either. Could've been another animal dumping in ice water.
