i have wanted a tattoo on my hand [you know, that space between your index funger and thumb] for 2 years now. seriously, i draw it on myself every day. but being 17 im not sure that i will want it in the future. did any of you get a tattoo as a young'n and seriously regret it later? i dont want to make a rather dumb decision that i will be mad about every day of my life.

and yes, i already have permission to get it, and yes, i would be getting it done professionally.

I think you're wise for second guessing yourself. I'm still a youngin' myself, but I personally wouldn't get a tattoo until I can legally do it drunk.

I would wait on that one, a tattoo right on your hand is something people will always see and you can't really hide it like you could somewhere else, I say wait atleast 2 years.

What if you wanted to be a hand model in the future? then you could only do alternative kind of advertising.

I considered getting a tat when I was younger but I'm pleased I didn't. The designs I considered to be truly amazing back then, I would now regret having on my body permanently.

i'd recommend not having it done professionally though, def the wisest choice

well i dont see myself becoming a hand model. and even if i did, i could always use my other hand.

the design is something i doodled one day in history, its kind of hard to describe. its sort of an abstraction of a star in the henna style. that probably doesnt make sense...
morganian
morganian on Dec 03 '06 at 9:51am
I would say don't do it, and you may find it hard to get a Decent tattooist to do it too, as any tattooist with any sense will not tattoo what is considerd "public skin" i.e. any part of your body that can't be covered by normal clothing (gloves don't count).

and @ hadaloo most decent tattooists will not tattoo anyone who is on drugs or drunk.

I waited 3 years after I was legally allowed to have one before getting my first tattoo and still do not regret it 14 years later.

*shrug* if you're not 100% sure then wait a little longer. Give yourself a deadline, like "if I still want this in 2 years..." and then do it. That is sorta what I did. Though that was more than partly outta being a stunningly poor student. O_o woooohoo!

I can honestly say that I love my tattoo and don't regret it at all. :)

@ staffell - WTF? if she is going to get it done she shouold at least get someone who can do a good job of it rather than some backroom spunk monkey!

MysteriousPete on Dec 03 '06 at 10:04am
I think they will tattoo you anywhere you want as long asyou give them money.

at least thats how it works around here...maybe we dont have any artists with any sense, well I guess they sense when it comes to making a profit.

it's more cost effective if you use a 2mil needle and ballpopint pen ink

i knew a kid in h.s. who gave himself a tatoo with a needle and a pen.

i think he regretted after, especailly since it looked like crap

veggieheadgeek on Dec 03 '06 at 10:13am
there are at least 3 people (that i know of) at my hs who have given themselves and others tattoos using needles and pen ink. although one used shoe shine mixed with urine. i kid you not.
MysteriousPete
MysteriousPete on Dec 03 '06 at 10:16am
wow, shoe shine and urine.

I wonder who convinced him or her that was a good idea, and then laughed at them after they thought it would work.

the design sounds nice though.

I'm pro ink on body. so I'd say yes, and you've thought about it long enough as well. 2 yrs is about the amt of time I spent thinking about my first one.

def get it done pro...

i'd say a BIG no to hand tats. Employers will look unfavourably on them!

Get temp ones instead- that way you'll never get bored of the design.

I personally have a couple tattoos. It really depends on the person. If you really want it now, does it matter if you'll regret it in the futur? I'm sure i will regret mine someday, but i can look back and be like i was living in the moment, and this made me happy for at least a few years.

The hand tattoo is a little sketchy tho, just to let you know, the healing would probably be killer . but i guess thats part of the deal. U'll be so happy with the results!

I've got two tattoos, but I waited until I was 21 to do the first one. A big thing for me was placement. Both of mine are sentimental and quite simple as well. I had thought about them for years and was very certain when I began the process. My first is on my lower back and the second was on my right wrist.

The thing about these was that they are easy to hide if necessary. The lower back is a bit cliche, but I liked the idea of it because it also isn't in MY face all the time so it's hard for me to get sick of seeing it.

The wrist was more personal (wise words pertaining to my grandpa, actually) and it meant a lot to me to get it. However, if need be, I can always wear long sleeves/a watch/a bracelet to cover it completely.

I would wait if I were you. Just a year or two more. Things change. I got one at 21 and I'm still happy with it but I think I could have done better... hence my desire to get this one now...

I wouldn't get a tat on your hand. people will see that right away, and not everyone favors tattoos.

I got one right after turning 21 on my neck and now, almost 4 years later I wish I hadn't done it.

i have wanted a tatoo for ages a small, plain, black star on my right wrist. I also always doodle it on and i f i regret it i could always cover it with braclets. But being 13 and my parents completly disagreeing, its like a impossible possibility.

the only people I know that regretted tatoos,

were the ones who got them young

my cousin, (who was 21 or 22 at the time) even regrets one of hers. I loved it, but she got sick of it and had it covered.

Wait as long as you can.

i know this girl who got "THUGLIFE" on her back.

she said she regretted it as soon as that needle hit her back. and i don't blame her.

   mezo on Dec 07 '06 at 11:12am
Of course it is, blythed! It's on YOU!

I got my first tattoo when I was 20; a fairy on my shoulder. Since then, I have added to her with scenery that covers most of my back. In summary, think of something you can get that can be added to if you grow to not like what you originally got.

tattoos are OK, but wait a bit until you get one. I took a LOOONG time before I got mine because I wanted to be sure it's what I wanted and wouldn't want to get rid of it later. It's been almost nine years and I don't regret it one bit. Mostly becaue I designed it myself and made sure it was something that meant a lot to me and always wood. I'm going to get another one that has been about three years in the planning.

but if you want to "test out" a hand tattoo, can't you get one of those henna ones just to see how it would look?
