Heyho Threadites,

I was wondering if any of the photographers could bestow some of their knowledge of the camera upon me.

I'm looking to get more serious about photography, and was wondering what would be a suitable camera to start with? I don't want one too confusing, or awesome, i just want one which will allow me to play around with shooting shots.
Is there a good brand i should stick with? Any basic technical terms/stats i should be concerned with?

Cheers me luvvies!

go with film, and just go to a camera store or a pawn shop, etc.. and get a minolta, canon, olympus, or nikon.(i think those are decent cameras)

nice sync there guys. Either. Have access to free blackroom at Uni so which would you suggest?

I would suggest learning with film.

I have a Pentax K1000.. they can be found relatively easily and are pretty cheap. They're considered to be really great student cameras. They're not too fancy and are pretty easy to use, but they also give a nice finished product.

I had a Semi-manual Nikon for acouple of years and worked great for me!

but I had to sell it for a fully manual camera

Oh yes, and the Pentax K1000 is fully manual.

That's just a suggestion, of course. I love mine. A lot of the photos on my flickr were taken with it.

starting about four pages back, actually. Most of the newer ones were shot with my digital camera because I've been feeling lazy.

Thanks girls! Will scout out the secondhand shops for a bargain! Do you know of any good photography books, or websites that i could use for pointers? Or are you both more trial and error kinda girls? :P

hm, not off the top of my head, sorry! My dad taught me all about the functions and such a long time ago, so I haven't had much experience with books.

Film is all well and good, but remember every 30 odd shots will cost you more money.

yeah, that's the other side of it.. however, if you have access to a darkroom that would be a really great thing to learn.

I would love to have a dSLR, but since I don't have that kind of money, I'm pretty satisfied with a nice digital Canon and my manual Pentax.
