Why has Threadless recently been printing extremely large designs on their shirts? Is it no longer fashionable to have small, neat designs on shirts, or is it just because it is now more affordable to make such large-scale prints? I really like this design but I hate the fact that the design takes up the whole front of the shirt.

the main reason I like this shirt is because the design is printed large. Maybe because it's different is why it appeals to me.

I'm one for smaller prints.
Just wanted to cast my vote, if it matters. :)

it really depends on the design... but the big greenyblue spot in the background doesn't look very appealing to me, in this case.

But with small prints, there is a lot of unused space!

Maybe the blue here is a bit much, but an expansive design is much more appealing to me. Larger prints tend to be a bit more expansive.

I'm also going to have to cast my vote for small designs. Sure there is a lot of unused space... but.... think about what the shirt ISNT saying..... yeah kinda zen-like hey...

no but seriously i find big designs a bit toooo.... "LOOK AT THE DESIGN ON MY SHIRT!" for my liking.

small designs look out of place on shirts... there's so much open space and the design just looks small and sometimes stupid :( some designs are too big though, but i'm one for filling up space :)

The bigger, the purtier. I think designs should continue onto another shirt, so people wouldnt even get the full concept of your tee until the next day when you wore the rest of the shirt, or just get your closest friend to walk beside you for entire day...

I still think the maxim "Less is more" holds true. Fair enough biouxe, up until now big prints weren't possible, but they could still print some small ones along with the larger designs! An example of the ideal print size for me is a shirt like "The War Against Work" which was reprinted this week.

1. I really really like this design.
2. I didn't like how the colors had been changed from the original - especially the background green circle. It used to be much less bold.
3. I can dig a big print, but this is too big. I like how the background circle is very imperfect, that's one of the reasons I fell for it in the first place. Unfortunately, the imperfection of the circle gets lost in the bigness of this print.
4. I bought it and wear it proudly anyways.

I'm not into small prints. But some of the prints lately have been huge. Just a little bit smaller, maybe two inches or so.

I couldn't agree more that this design, and many, many others available on this site are simply too LARGE on the shirts. Good designs need some space around them, to be better appreciated and feel less crammed in.

Exactly. It's only a recent fad though, so maybe the large designs will soon crawl off and die quietly when the smaller and better designs triumphantly return.

Come on - this huge building would look ridiculous and cluttered as a small design - all the detail would be lost.

The large print captures the scale and awesome size of the building, and means you can see all the amazing, intricate details.

You've picked the wrong large design to criticise.

I completely disagree. The design is actually too large to appreciate as it almost wraps around the side of the wearer, and should therefore be 50-75% smaller. And compostion should never be sacrificed just to get a more detailed print.
iDanSimpson
iDanSimpson on Sep 05 '07 at 11:36am
while i agree that this shirt is too big. it shouldn't be 50=75% smaller. it should be roughly 15-33.3% smaller.

this is, of course, completely useless arguing, however, these are just my thoughts.

Oops, what I meant is that it should be 50-75% of its current size, so I agree with your size reduction suggestion iDan.

The best kind of arguments are pointless!

It's a matter of taste. While this print is substantially larger than normal, many sizes (particularly the larger printed, men's). So it is popular. As to why it is popular... I think the fact that people wanting attention has to do with it.
