Currently reading Charles Burns' amazing, dark, weirdy BLACK HOLE. It's very well known, so not the most out of the blue recommendation, but I only just got it.
Uh, before that I was working through more Love & Rockets. Brilliant, as ever.
Uh, next on the comix lust list is Chester Brown's biopic of Louis Riel, the historical French radical and all-round deluded weirdo. Can't wait.
I've only read a few. Maus is really amazing, of course. I just finished Persepolis which is great too. It tells the story of growing up in Iran from a girl's perspective during the Iran/Iraq war. Watchmen was quite ground breaking in its time. It's a clever take on the whole super hero genre with complex characters and an interesting story line. The artist Seth has done some interesting graphic novels... especially his personal stories collected from his Palookaville series. I always enjoyed the Akira series too (which was later turned into an animated film).
haha, 13strong... sorry for my Watchmen, Persepolis, Maus triumvirate of suggestions. Like I said, my knowledge of graphic novels and comics is a bit on the shallow side. They are pretty good though *cough*. I'll check out some of the stuff you suggested.
I'm not a true comic book geek ... but I do love Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Season 8 (mostly because I was a fan of the show) ... I'm looking to check out the Serenity series next.
I too was going to suggest Louis Riel....who was not French but Metis (descended from French fur traders and Canadian Aboriginals). Anyways....I heard that Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron was really good.
...so I've heard. I'm yet to read it
