Currently reading Charles Burns' amazing, dark, weirdy BLACK HOLE. It's very well known, so not the most out of the blue recommendation, but I only just got it.

Uh, before that I was working through more Love & Rockets. Brilliant, as ever.

Uh, next on the comix lust list is Chester Brown's biopic of Louis Riel, the historical French radical and all-round deluded weirdo. Can't wait.

Aw man - there's so much stuff!

I thought Goon was kinda dull... just me though.

Oh - worth a look is the fantastically funny and cool Scott Pilgrim (check out loads of free samples at www.scottpilgrim.com).

You're welcome.

I've only read a few. Maus is really amazing, of course. I just finished Persepolis which is great too. It tells the story of growing up in Iran from a girl's perspective during the Iran/Iraq war. Watchmen was quite ground breaking in its time. It's a clever take on the whole super hero genre with complex characters and an interesting story line. The artist Seth has done some interesting graphic novels... especially his personal stories collected from his Palookaville series. I always enjoyed the Akira series too (which was later turned into an animated film).

Anything by Seth's friend Chester Brown is usually great too.

I would be nice to hear some variations from the usual recommendations of Watchmen, Persepolis, Maus, Dark Knight Returns, Black Hole etc etc.

They are all great, of course.

That said, Joe Sacco's work is ALWAYS worth a look.

I gotta say, a good place to start with art comics is a good anthology, which can lead you on to the works of the artists and writers who appeal.

I recommend "An Anthology of Graphic Fiction" by Ivan Brunetti. It's very, very good.

Oh - and Opifan - like I said, Chester Brown's "Louis Riel" is next on my list.

haha, 13strong... sorry for my Watchmen, Persepolis, Maus triumvirate of suggestions. Like I said, my knowledge of graphic novels and comics is a bit on the shallow side. They are pretty good though *cough*. I'll check out some of the stuff you suggested.

I'm not a true comic book geek ... but I do love Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Season 8 (mostly because I was a fan of the show) ... I'm looking to check out the Serenity series next.

"I'm not a true comic book geek"

Yeah, and you don't have to be to like comics.

I just started reading Watchmen and so far it's fantastic.

The first comic series I got really into was Y: The Last Man... It's almost finished now, and it is... friggin' amazing... I definitely recommend it.

I too was going to suggest Louis Riel....who was not French but Metis (descended from French fur traders and Canadian Aboriginals). Anyways....I heard that Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron was really good.
