If you like the "long" factor, try Tolstoy --- War and Peace or Anna Karenina. Those are very enjoyable classics.

I'm the kind of person who likes books well written. I love classics. well written as in books like to kill a mockingbird, count of monte cristo, & Fahrenheit 451. I'm the kind of person who will read harry potter 20 times over because I think they're really good, even though I'm not a harry potter nerd. I like the sisterhood of the traveling pants series.

I just really really like to read.

i always recommend catch 22 (joseph heller). it's my faaavorite.

but if you like fahrenheit 451, i'd suggest reading some more dystopian society books! such as 1984 (george orwell) and handmaid's tale (margaret atwood).

also, life of pi (yann martel), house of leaves (mark danielewski), and still life with woodpecker (tom robbins) are more of my favorites.

and reading anything by umberto eco will fill your mind with a better vocabulary and a better base for words in other languages...his stuff is deep with intelligence and a lot of mixed elements. he's a more recent author, but i think his stuff is classic.

oooh - Umberto Eco - Name of the Rose is a pretty good read (and gentle introduction to Eco), Foucault's Pendulum is filled with so much history and little factoids that it takes a long time reading it in bits to try to absorb it all -

interesting non-fiction:

Stiff: the curious lives of human cadavers - Mary Roach

fiction - anything by George Orwell, HG Wells, Huxley, Phillip K Dick, William S Burroughs...

Infidel - Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Collapse - Jared Diamond (reading it now)

Seriously, read "Winter's Tale." It's probably the best piece of American fiction in the last twenty years.

I just picked up Brave New World on Saturday, I'm ashamed of myself for not having read it yet.

I second Catch22, I love that book. It's a very difficult read though, and corrupts the minds of youths.
