The final piece is a lot more elaborate, but here is a loop of a test session

My first sub this year. Where has the time gone?

“LOST MY VOICE” by Adam White & Don Albrecht

A NEW IDEA using AUGMENTED REALITY.

Imagine looking into your monitor. A familiar room, a familiar face, but in the air a
wild feathered friend floats inches from your face, stars sparkle around your head,
and a feather or two drops to the floor.

Now it can happen. After 6 months of testing, programming, code, and design,
comes a fully functioning piece of interactive apparel.

Below is my 'Threadless Loves New Art and New Ideas' design 'lost my voice'. Due to the size requirement, the voting page image quality is reduced considerably. Below it's set much higher.

this is really amazing adam!! i hope that people understand what is going on when they vote for this or it could be in danger of being dramatically underscored.

now that's just crazy.

so like, does it have some kind of sensor sewn into it or what? to be honest, the first time I saw this presentation I thought it was just a flashy gimmick.
olie!
   olie! on Aug 12 '09 at 3:55pm
yeah I'm a little curious how this would work. I think I've seen similar kind of things before but they have all had some kind of chip or sensor embedded into the fabric. How would Threadless do that?
adamwhite
   adamwhite on Aug 12 '09 at 3:57pm
We have programed 2 trigger censors within the print that act as 'activate' and 'confirm', making it impossible to counterfeit. Pretty crazy stuff. We have spent the last 6+ months doing tests, wheww!

olie!
   olie! on Aug 12 '09 at 9:00pm
so are they electronic censors? can you post a pic of what they look like? I am also curious how Threadless would be able to print these since you seem to be claiming it uses some technology they probably wouldn't have access to and/or be rather expensive. . . unless I'm wrong?

Basically, I think it's awesome, just curious how it all works
adamwhite
   adamwhite on Aug 12 '09 at 9:07pm
While staying in the agreement with the programmer, I can say it will not need any censors outside of the triggers within the print. No extra expenses needed, luckily.

I loved the design even before I realized how innovative and completely awesome your idea is. I hope people take the time to understand the concept behind it and give this the props it deserves. Fantastic!

THe augmented reality has worked off of a simple printed sheet of paper (the sasquatch program in particular) so chips aren't necessary it seems.

I REALLY dig this whole idea.

Mind-blowing, sir.

of1000kings on Aug 12 '09 at 10:04pm
so it's basically the program that's doing all of the work, not the T?

would an extra program need to be downloaded?
adamwhite
   adamwhite on Aug 12 '09 at 10:06pm
None, just the Flash plug-in that allows it to view the Flash above and a webcam. Good question.

adamwhite

No extra program needed, just the Flash plug-in that allows it to view the Flash above and a webcam.

We have programed 2 trigger censors within the print that act as 'activate' and 'confirm', making it impossible to counterfeit. We have spent the last 6+ months doing tests.

Wearing the shirt looking into a webcam on a Threadless page, will activate the prints trigger which displays all the 3D goodness within your cams display.

At the very least Threadless better print up a couple of these and make a really cool Tee-Vee episode testing them out!
Edamame Obake
Edamame Obake on Aug 14 '09 at 9:56pm
aha! Thanks for clarifying. I didn't get it before, but now I think you're BADASS

(also, I hope the trigger censors aren't too expensive, I hope it doesn't increase the price of the shirt.)
Edamame Obake
Edamame Obake on Aug 15 '09 at 1:50am
what happens if i decide to wash my shirt? or if it rains will the trigger censors electrocute me? ; )
fat pigeon
fat pigeon on Aug 15 '09 at 5:00am
The triggers are just points within the art that have been programmed to be recognized. Once these 2 points in the art are in view on your webcam it will automatically activate the 3d graphic. As I understand it you could print out the design on a piece of paper or take a picture of yourself wearing the tee, hold it up to the webcam and get the same result as well. So, no actual censors will be sewn into the shirt or anything like that, without the webcam it is just a t-shirt with an awesome graphic on it.

Please correct me if I am wrong Adam.
Edamame Obake

wow! that's amazing. 5 $ for sure for new ideas!
I heard that Doritos did that to their bag, and a music video would come up when activated.

SuperRyan
SuperRyan on Aug 15 '09 at 11:02am
It's a cool idea and for the 'new art' loves it is perfect!

But, I don't really see the extent of this. This will only work in front of a webcam right? Then what? It moves with you?
Edamame Obake
Edamame Obake on Aug 15 '09 at 12:19pm
yeah! that's the point is that it's an interactive t-shirt, it's beyond a regular t-shirt
