How do college-aged kids manage to be so irresponsible?
I'm currently trying to deal with a group project that's moving at snail's pace even though we present this coming Monday. That's not the issue, though. The issue is that only 4/5 of us have actually been doing any work. And the bigger issue is that we all have to sign a piece of paper describing what we personally contributed to the project.
I kind of took up the reigns in communication between all of us since after a certain point it became obvious that nobody else was going to do it. So far I haven't been about to establish communication with our fifth person.
I'm actually pretty sure I've never even SEEN him in class.

Now the big problem is that part of our project grade is determined by this sheet of paper that details what each of us contributed to the project. Each member has to sign it. I'm kind of afraid it's too late to go to the professor, but I really don't want my grade to suffer over a missing signature.

Group projects are CRUEL.

Count yourself lucky that 4/5 is doing work! Ugh hate group projects regardless.

I don't work well in groups (or alone) and always feel like I bring the project down. So I hate them from the other side of the coin.

idk how it's working in your school -- but in mine, EVERYONE (myself included) become absolutely irresponsible whenever something arises that we're not paying to deal with.

For example: I'm a JR Illustration Major. The second a teacher tries to throw a project at me that has nothing to do with my major -- I ignore it as much as possible.

I am actually pleased that everyone else seems to be trying. It's nice compared to some of the groups I've worked with in the past. It's just the fifth person who has me pulling my hair out. :(

I've totally been that person before too, Steve, via my stage fright. But I've been in so many group projects at this point in my college career that I can't let myself fail when other people are counting on me to hold up my end of the work. It just seems like a courtesy thing, you know? If you don't plan on doing any work, let the rest of your group know. :/

Haha, I don't think any of us can use that excuse in this particular class, Robert. We're all communication or government majors, and the class is totally relevant to both majors. I think our fifth person is just a slacker/partier/average college student.

I mean, I try hard. and if I get like a specific taskt o go off and do, I'll do it, but t will most likely suck.

Educators Perspective:

Its hard to speak about specific projects, but in general it is a good experience to work in groups at every level of learning. There are numerous ways that it is beneficial to everyone involved. Yes there can be schmucks in the world that make it more difficult, but there are those same people in the real world, so often this can be a learning experience in that manner. There are lot of experiences that students should garner that cannot be taught by going it alone or maybe to in-depth to tackle in the time a lotted, group work becomes necessary. When students have issues with group work, they are often the ones who are doing a large amount of the work and a good educator will recognize that and be sure that their grade reflects the work they did. Its a difficult situation, but tis important to look at what you are learning from the situation as a whole.

Can't you just sign the fifth signature Mickey Mouse and then explain to the teacher that they weren't around to contribute?

I do understand why group projects exist, and I've been in groups before that actually functioned quite well. My main distrust comes from having been in more bad groups than good. Being in a bad group means spreading myself thinner, and I feel that as a result, I get less or learn less from the project than I could have. So in a way, I'm being cheated out of something.
I understand I have to be realistic with my expectations of people, but just that is certainly not enough to keep me from anger/worry/disappointment.

Get used to relying on unreliable people if you envision yourself having any type of job. That sign up sheet thing sounds like the one thing that tries to level the playing field a little by creati.g some type of accountability. If person 5 turns out to have never been in class I don't see how that would affect yr grade.

I just think of the Group Project thing as a means of getting the individual to work with others. Pretty much everything school-related can be pretty isolating, at least from my experience. I still am not a very big fan of them which is worrisome because being employed anywhere seems like one big group project.

Anyway, you should definitely try emailing/talking to the professor about that fifth person.

I remember my last group project. Art History class. 5 original members - I think only 4 were ever seen. Eventually it dropped down to 3, then in the end it was only 2 (including me) that had to present.

Even though it was a "group" project, we divided up work, so we just worked alone and then complied. We did powerpoints.

I learned a good amount of information about Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, though. So that wasn't so bad.

Anna would totally be my best lady.
People'd be like, "You gotta have a best man dawg. That gay." And I'd be all like, "Yo, fuck you, poopturd, I can do whatever I want! It my wedding."
And then Anna and I would smash fists and start breakdancing all over the altar.
