I just got back from my trip to Germany Austria and Czech! I had an awesome time. Drawing never ceases to amaze me in its ability to cause people to approach you. People just felt comfortable coming up and talking to me when I was drawing, and that's really great. I got to meet many really interesting people and had some great experiences.

Below is the sketchbook. this one is hand-bound on 140lb hot press fabriano artistico paper, which I tinted so it's off-white.

this sketchbook is kind of different from others of mine, since I really just kind of used it as a place to experiment and just have fun with.

sorry for the bad quality of some of the pics. if you're curious about what anything says, I can translate.

This is the most beautiful sketchbook I've ever seen. I agree with wullagaru, you could and should seriously publish this.

To start off with, I was jealous of your incredible abilities. But now I'm jealous of your incredible abilities AND all of the cool places you've been going.

Amazing work, as always.

Since we are now friends from the last book you posted, I thought I should comment again. This is really marvelous. Do you paint them while you're there or just sketch and then paint later?

I paint it all while I'm there. It takes about 2, maybe 3 hours for the more detailed and painted spreads, some of the quicky's like just black and white sketches from musems might only take half an hour or so. it kind of depends. Some of these pages I was real dedicated to rendering out real well and thinking about compositons, and others I just kind of pooped out whatever all over the place.

Oh, and my favorite city was probably Prague or Salzburg, but I'm probably a little more partial to the quiet towns, like Hallstatt Austria.

question,
what kind of sketch book is that?
what kind of pens.
and what kind of paint?
cbuchholz
   cbuchholz on Jun 04 '08 at 2:04pm
The sketchbook is handmade, and it's 140lb. fabriano artistico hot press paper.

the pens are Faber Castell Pitt pens. They come in four thicknesses of nibs. I like the brush tips at first, but the get worn out and loose the point pretty much on your first sketch.

The paint is winsor newton watercolor.

Your sketchbooks are going to be worth a fortune one day, I'm sure of it.

Damn, you are too good.

Actually, I look at your sketches often. The beautiful renderings of your dreams inspired me to start an illustrative dream journal, which I haven't done yet, but it will definitely happen this summer. Anyway...

great colors and imagery

I'm always worried the pages with wrinkle or stick together but I guess that's why you are using 140lb hot press

thanks guys! In the case of this sketchbook, all were done right on the spot, and they usually take about an hour or two. One cool thing was that I filled my waterbrushes up with water from all the amzing fountains to do the art.

Another amazing book!
I went to Prague, Salzburg, Český Krumlov and Český Budejovic. Český Krumlov is the most gorgeous place I have even seen. Prague was just amazing. I can't wait to go back!
You captured the cites with wonderful beauty. Thank you very much for sharing.

This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Seriously. You need to write a book in diary narrative form, illustrate it like that, get it printed, and sell me one. Or, like, fifty. Wow that's cool.
