I know I haven't been doing any T-shirts lately, but I have been busy! My aunt gave me this old record book which was written in by my great great grandma. It has entries in it dated 1876! It mostly contains names of people who are "dropped" or "deceased". I decided to deface it with drawings from my trip to Italy that I took last year.

I was really kicking myself for not drawing when I was actually there, but this is the next best thing. Actually, drawing from photos does have some advantages, but it's not even close to the real thing.

Saturday I'm leaving for Europe again, and this time, I'm drawing while I'm there!

Here are the sketches...

It's called radiant concentrated watercolor. It acts similarly to watercolor, excpet it's in liquid form, and it's more saturated than watercolor. In fact, throughout most of this I've only used about six or seven different inks, and those ones are the more darker tones that PH martin makes. The bright ones can burn out your eyes.

Those were great! I loved the Positano ones, and I was going to go to the Blue grotto as part of my Italian class trip, but it was too much money :(. These make me wish I could just go to Italy and draw. What did you use for the coloring (probably really obvious, but I don't want to assume.)

Oh, scratch my question then, It was answered while i was typing the question :X. Anyway, the whole book is great!

Everybody says I should publish it and sell it, but I don't know. I just don't know how great it would be in printed book form. the pages are kind of wonky and crinkly and the whole thing is falling apart, so I don't know how you'd get it in a book, unless it was just pictures of it like this, and that seems pointless kind of. I just don't think publishers would be interested in something like this.

I agree that your typical glossy-paged art book would not do this justice but I wonder if you couldn't get a more customized printing that tries to sort of replicate the original. If I were this good I might look into it at least.

anyways, even if you don't pursue it, I think you have incredible records of your memories and that is priceless.

I might spend a semester in cortona in a year or so if I don't fail out of school

Thanks Steve! Like you said, it just makes me happy to be able to take the time and reflect on the trip and I just enjoy drawing. Part of me would like to maybe publish it, but I guess a bigger part of me just wants to move on to the next drawing book.

I wish some business minded guy would just come along, publish it, get rich off of it, and then give me just enough money to afford paint. I went to buy some oil paints the other day, and some tubes were 38 dollars!! And that's with 40% off!!! I just left the store empty handed, instilled with a strong desire to do more charcoal drawings.

chris are those light fast inks .. cause I know that a lot of dyes and inks fade after a while and was just wondering cause you do get great color with those
wullagaru
   wullagaru on May 14 '08 at 1:09pm
alos if youre just starting out in oils get teh student grade first .. the colors arent quite as strong as pro grade but its not too bad a difference and teh price is much easer on teh wallet
cbuchholz
   cbuchholz on May 14 '08 at 1:17pm
You know what wulla, I just looked them up and it turns out that they aren't lightfast. I guess they are meant to be reproduced. Oh well, I'll try to keep it out of the sun. I don't have high hopes for the thing lasting long anyhow, none of the paper is archival, and some of it was water damaged right from the start.

I think I do need to get the student grade. That kind of bothers me though, because they aren't cheap either, and it feels stupid spending so much money for something of inferior quality.
wullagaru
   wullagaru on May 14 '08 at 1:21pm
aha yeah thats why I never got into dyes even thoughh the colors are waaaay better

as for the student grade yeah I do know what you mean although just to give you the idea of how oils work and to see if you like them theyre great but once youve reached that decision id upgrade (its a pain I know Im still doing it)
