I've been doing alot of sketching lately. I've been wanting to work on some individual paintings on canvas or watercolor paper, but when I think about starting I ultimately end up just working in my sketchbook. I think there's something about working in book form that has me addicted. It's also nice because I don't have to be cramped up in a studio to do it, I can work in my sketchbook anywhere I go.

Here's some of my latest. These drawings fill up the moleskine I had in NY...

These sketches are for a journal I'm doing depicting dreams that I've had. This book has been really interesting to work on. At first, most of my dreams make no sense whatsoever, but as I sketch them and describe what happens in them, I start to see many recurring themes, and even reasons why I may have had the dream.

This dream was really cool. Speedy Joe actually made a guest appearance in this one. He was in the car with me when I was driving through the black and white town.

When I do the visuals for these dreams, I try to draw them in a way the best represents the way the dreams happened and were seen. this dream was very ordered, almost monotonous. The things that happened in it were horrific, but it was seen in a very cold unfeeling manner. That's why I represented it like this.

This one had alot of suffering animals in it. That seems to be a recurring theme in my dreams. It also had some incredibly random stuff that I still haven't made sense of.

Why is my old bowling ball stuck in this rapids? Why the abused dogs in cages?

Wow, really great drawings/paintings again! Your art is always so full of life! That dream sequence one was pretty interesting too. It almost looks like watching a movie rather than seeing it from a firsthand perspective.

p.s. You should change your avatar! :-P

p.p.s. Go to comicon!

   cbuchholz on Mar 19 '08 at 10:39am
thanks guys! The colors are getting brighter because I switched to using Dr. PH martin's concentrated watercolors. That's what I used on all of the dream drawings. They're insanely bright, and you have to add alot of water or they burn your retinas out.

I know Priscilla, I was actually just thinking that! Also, forgive me for not knowing, but what is Comicon? I'll go look it up.

these are AMAZING! have you been using those jars from new york for your colors?

and yes, go to comicon!!

i really love the "one with all the drowning" page
cbuchholz
   cbuchholz on Mar 19 '08 at 10:47am
You mean the pill jars? Yeah, I've been using them. They work great for watercolors, but they don't work so well for the PH martin's because those things are so concentrated that you almost need a full bucket of water to clean the color out of your brush.

cbuchholz

Well for a while my well water was contaminated with sulfur. I don't think that helped so much with the sketching, but if you want explosive diarhhea that's the way to go.

what do you do? sketch on the spot and then come home and watercolor it, or do you just go from memories of the day? looks like you are sketching from where you sit all the things you see. just curious your process...
cbuchholz
   cbuchholz on Mar 20 '08 at 9:13am
I usually sketch on spot and do the watercolor on spot. I have a little travel watercolor pallette that I use, and I also have been using Niji brushes which hold their own water. All you have to squeeze them and a drop or two of water comes out. It's perfect for travel watercoloring. I also have been using a sectional pill container to hold water. That way I have 6 clean shots of water and they get me through the day.

For anybody who says they can't do watercolor, here's an easy way to get your foot in the door. Get yourself an old fashioned dip pen, and a bottle of dr. PH Martin's concentrated watercolor, preferrably a somewhat dark color. PH martin's is a liquid watercolor, so you can dip the pen in the bottle and use it like any ink. Do a line drawing with the watercolor, then use a wet brush to kind of soften your lines and add shading. It's real easy to do. It's monochromatic, but it's a good way to get your foot in the door for using more color. Here's an example of what it looks like if you follow that procedure...

Holy shit, these are amazing. I would absolutely, genuinely, just buy those sketchbooks, precisely as they are, complete with crinkly pages and watercolour smells.

These are the sketchbooks I dream about being able to create.
cbuchholz
   cbuchholz on Mar 20 '08 at 9:24am
You can do it Sarah!! If you try my method written out above, it's real easy. All it takes is a little practice, but it's so enjoyable because you can take a book and a bottle of ink with you just about anywhere and that's all you really need.

don't be so modest rolf! I've seen your sketches. It really pulls things together when you brush some water over the lines. The drawing itself above wasn't good, but when I added a little water over top and did some shading it really pulls things together.
martiandrivein
martiandrivein on Mar 20 '08 at 1:23pm
I'm actually going to try some watercolor sometime soon, so I'll probably start off with the single color, like you said. I'm not a very experienced painter by any means. But seriously. if it's not in your water... are you and Jim on the same diets? haha you guys are incredible.

   cbuchholz on Mar 20 '08 at 1:25pm
thanks rolf! We do share large pepperoni pizzas from time to time.

great to hear you'll be doing some watercolors! you'll enjoy it immensely I'm sure! Like I said, Doc PH Martin's radiant concentrateds are the way to go, especially if you like bright colors.
