I just got back from vacation at Disney World! It was the first time for my nephew and neice so it was really fun. Plus, you just have to admire the meticulous detail disney goes to in order to create a theme. I brought a sketchbook this time to cature some of it. I'm a big fan of the architecture especially.

Here's some of my sketches....

awesome sketches chris, i've still never been to disney land or world.
crap.

you should really do this loose stuff on some shirts here, and water colors. i think we'd all really love that!

thanks guys!! No olli, I missed that! But believe me I was looking for it!

I was there for about 10 days and some of the lesser detailed spreads took about 30 minutes, other more detailed ones might have taken an hour and a half or so.

For some of them, I primed the page first with watercolor back at the hotel; just put a large swath of color and maybe some splatters and designs. Then when I got to the park I tried to pick a subject that complimented the design. I'm not sure how successful that was, but It was a fun way of working.

For the one I had my niece scribble all over the page first and tried to make it work.

Seriously, these actually look like sketchbook pages from some of the Disney animators. They're fantastic. I think they'd love to see these.

I'd love to do some designs like this for threadless Josh! I've been meaning to for a really long time, but then I just get sidetracked with things. I definately plan on doing that in the future though.

thanks squinty and everybody! Actually vinny I did have alot of free time. I wasn't sure how this sketch book thing would work since I've never tried it on vacation till now. I thought it might be a little hectic trying to do sketches while at the same time just trying to have a good time. but it wasn't like that at all. In fact I felt more realaxed this trip then I did most others. Instead of rushing everywhere I often stopped to just sit and relax and draw what I saw. I actually feel like I saw more of the park since I took the time to really notice everything. And I got on most of the rides too which is fun!

you didn't have time for the rides did you chris?

i love your sketchbooks dude.
cbuchholz
   cbuchholz on Feb 06 '08 at 9:54am
Yeah actually I did Steven! I'm not one who needs to go on a ride a couple times in a row, but I did get on the cool ones at least once. I wish they'd slow the rides down so I could draw them actually.

It was really amazing how many people I met because of this too. I met other illustrators and all kinds of interesting people.

Ha! I don't know Sonmi, I'll try, but I might get nervous. I won't feel nervous though if we all bring our sketchboooks and draw. that would be fun!

Priscilla, I don't know how the time worked out so well. I used the fastpass on the bigger rides, and then I did take one day all to myself to just draw and that day I only did two rides. But honestly it didn't feel rushed, it was very relaxing.

If I tried to do that many drawing while at Disney my hours would go like this:
Hours doing anything other than drawing while at the park = 1
Hours drawing while I was there = 47

oh and the "You are Too Awesome Police" are going to be knocking at your door any minute now.
