As some of you know, my wife and I are expecting our first child in late Nov/early Dec. Needless to say, we're thrilled but during a recent doc appointment, I asked about the risks/benefits of the swine flu vaccine.

Despite the fact that the vaccine is still being tested and won't be available until mid October, our doc said that pregnant women would be the first to get it due to their vulnerability to swine flu and that the benefits outweigh the risks.

Since then, I've done some research and have found plenty of info both in support and opposition of pregnant women getting the vaccine.

I know there are some parents of young children and other expecting parents out there so I figured I throw the question to all of you: will you get the swine flu (or regular flu) vaccine for your pregnant wife and/or young child?

I'm not a parent or anything, but I am a Public Health Major and every one of my professors and all of the MPH students I have talked to about vaccines say to get them. Unless the benefits greatly outweigh the risks, a vaccine is not even released or used. Hopefully, that is helpful.

Congrats on becoming a parent too!

She should get it. Once the little one is born, they don't give the vaccine in one big dose, but break it up into smaller units. And once he/she is bigger, they have a swab to put up the nose instead of a shot.

Since you're asking me my opinion I'll give it to you. Normally I tell people to do research and make an informed decision. I commend you for taking the initiative and asking your doc.

Based on my research I have chosen not to vaccinate my youngest child and stopped vaccinating my oldest at about 3 years of age.

You may have already found it but this website gives you some good information such as 8 Questions. There is also a safer way to vaccinate but I can't find it right now. For example, waiting until the child is 18 months and separating the vaccines instead giving them a bunch (sometimes as much as 5 or more) at once.

They cannot guarantee that these vaccines are either 100% safe or effective. (Vaccine Injury Compensation)

Whatever you and your wife decide, don't let the doctor bully you. It's your child and you choose what's best. I hope all goes well for you both!

the one thing that's made me really leery about the swine flu vaccine is that Sebelius has agreed to an immunity deal with the pharma groups so if it turns out that there's something wrong with the vaccine, the govt and the drug makers can't be sued. if your product is safe, why the need to cover your ass?

For a brand new virus that's constantly mutating, a rushed vaccine doesn't sound a good idea to me. But I'm not a doctor or scientist... so don't take my advice.

I would say no. There are many ways to build up her immune system naturally and keep her strong no matter what kind of flu is out there. Research about immune-boosting foods, they work!!

all i know is if your wife gets the flu while she is pregnant, that potentially endangers your child for life

but lots of ppl survived before vaccinations, so it is up to your family

thanks for the feedback everyone. i did some additional research and it turns out that there's an adjuvant free (no squalene, no thimerosal) vaccine in development call celvapan. if we decided to have my wife vaccinated, we'll insist that she's receives that one.
