so if you're not into reading "all about my day" blogs, discontinue now and just leave a really odd comment at the bottom..

anywho:

woke up early this morning (9AM, early for me, i guess) to my cellphone ringing. it's my boss, so i hit "ignore" once and then answer when she calls a second time.

in a raspy, morning voice "ashley, hey it's jen. can you come in as soon as possible. i'm just not feeling too well and would love to just stay downstairs in the office all day. or as much as possible."

also, in a raspy morning voice gromphpoh hey jen. oh yeah? oh ok, yeah i'll be in in a bit, let me just shower or something.. "

so i got to work at 10AM, waited tables until 4PM. serving brunch and bloody marys and mimosas to hungover yuppies allll day. (i did make good money though)

headed over to crazy stationary store down the street from work to try to get a bit of holiday shopping done and let me tell you, was THAT a mistake. that place sucked me in and made me want to stay forever!! anyway, i grabbed a cab towards downtown because i was running late for my other job, which started at 5PM.

got to work late and there was a shitload of work waiting there for me. this is a job in a photo lab, where i develop photos and negatives the whole shift. and it's downtown so the clientèle consists of very rich, picky new and old money who have a lot of special requests (because they "spend a lot of money here and they deserve it". )

so there are about 50 rolls of film for this photog who brings in huge projects about twice a year. this wouldn't be such a big deal BUT he has special requests. he shoots with a pro film slr/lighting system so his shots look like nice studio head shots for, say, a model's portfolio or for a cheap comp card or something. BUT, he wants them to be really REALLY light and washed out and "cool" (so tinted cyan or blue, whichever looks best with the skin tones). and if he doesn't like the way a couple prints from a roll look, i have to re-do the whole roll. so, it's time consuming, this shit-load of work that was waiting for me when i got there. mix in the regular night's workload of digital prints, enlargements, etc.. and.. it's a lot..

THEN, the same photog brings in another batch of 50 rolls to be done in about one and one half hour.

THEN, my photo machine breaks down!! at the most in-opportune moment it possibly could.

usually when this happens, it's a minor glitch/mechanical error that i can easily fix in a half hour or less. this time, no such luck. could not, for the life of me, figure out how to fix this error that was not letting me get my job done.

long after the store has closed to customers (and i was supposed to be at home.. or even better, at the bar celebrating my friend's bday) and the photographer has exploded to both myself and my manager over the phone about how much is on the line for him if we can't somehow get these photos printed for him (money, reputation, etc.. blah blah) we finally figure out a solution to the problem.

i have to take these 50 rolls (which have already been developed, so they're more susceptible to dust, scratches, water marks from the freezing rain that's falling here) to another lab in my district which has been closed for about 3 hours already. one of the workers there has to go to the store, open the lab, warm up the printing machines, print all of his stuff that was waiting in the computer to be printed in the morning, and wait for me to get there to print these rolls of film.

THEN he has to shut down his lab for the second time in one day (annoying).

so that's what happened. i went over to the other lab, printed the stuff, my manager came via cab to this other lab, picked up the stuff i printed, brought it back to MY lab to be picked up at 1AM by this photographer who was about to cry with how upset he was about all of this.

oh, and mixed in to this whole mess were other little aggravating moments like : *thinking i had fixed the error on my printer because it started to work for a couple minutes and then BAM! same error message again.
*the POS system at my lab screwing up and going berserk because there's a new glitch that goes hay-wire when a transaction is over 200 line items long or something (over 200 rolls of film for this one photographer)..
*shitty weather
*unexpectedly long day
*new line cook at the restaurant = more mistakes on food

so.... to make a long story short. i had a really long odd day and now i'm at that stage where i'm tired but i can't fall asleep and i have to wake up early again tomorrow.

bahh humbug

but hey! a couple good things.. i got good tips this morning at my waitress job.. AND this crazy photog who was freaking out decided that since he had (literally) thousands of dollars that he would lose if we didn't go out of our way to print his photos tonight, decided to throw a grand at us to split between myself, my manager, and the other lab guy who had to re-open and re-close the other lab.. pretty cool? i think so.

blah!

love,
ashley!

WOW. I actually did read all of that (the photo lab part sucked me in) I used to work at an extremely busy one hour photo lab and I know EXACTLYYYY what you are talking about, i.e. all of a sudden you have 30 rolls that HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO be done in an hour and then boom, the machine is down. Does your lab use a Noritsu printer? I always had trouble with ours. Having to tell customers when they come back to get their prints/film that they aren't ready is the worst feeling!!!!

yes, hooray money!! though i wish i didn't say that so often. i do love me some green backs, though..

yeah i always love talking with photo labbies because they all have horror stories of insane or gross pics or lab meltdowns.. i work with fuji frontier printers, not noritsu.. but they're pretty similar. at least the older models were.. not sure about how noritsu is going these days..

grossest pic ever developed, wimbels?

haha, that sounds like one of m stories. Whenever I tell a really long story, i always end it with "and then I found 10 bucks!"

...yours is better though. Always nice when a shitty day ends on a high.

bloody photographers. I have the opposite problem. I take stuff to the local lab and they print what they think looks best regardless of what I want or tell them to do. bastards, drives me nuts.

hahah spaaaaaace! i love it...

yeah we try to print exactly how the photog wants us to so they come back and we take their money again and again.. but we're pretty close to being a custom lab. i'd say semi-custom..

thanks for all the kind words, peeps. now i'm off to work again!

*crosses fingers that today will be better*

mcpoodles, I have a few! The lab where I worked was conveniently located in a college town, so that meant not only professors bringing stuff in, but frat guys too.

I had a roll that a college guy dropped off that started with a some shots of a dorm room with a naked sleeping guy & girl in the bottom bunk. Obviously, they had had sex, obviously, they were PISSED drunk & passed out, and obviously, the roommate found them that way and decided to document the situation. But that wasn't enough, he was with a friend so they took off their shirts and stood around the bed so it looked like they were naked and had just had sex with the girl too. THEN, the guy obviously called his entire floor to come in the room too, removed their shirts, and all kneel next to the bed so it now looked like 20 naked guys had all had sex with this poor girl. Awful. I didn't print some of the photos because 1) I could just imagine this girls shame if they got out 2) who knows if the girl is underage, and then with my luck I'd get in trouble for printing the photos! I had to explain all of this to the guy when he came back and he was PISSED but I was like okay, what if this was your little sister?

2) The town is not only a college town, but the same town where the Cleveland Browns Training camp is located. So we see football players driving and shopping around all of the time. One time, a player (Melvin Fowler) came in and just dropped off a full 1gb sd card. He had photos on there... oh mygod. He'd gone to LA, went to the playboy mansion, had his photo taken with all the bunnies, hugh hefner, jamie fox, all kinds of celebs. Then, he went to Vegas, went to a strip club, had all these pictures of him dancing with the strippers AND HAVING SEX WITH THEM in a mirrored room. No joke.

3)Going back to the whole being located in a college town, I've seen my fair share of pooping/puking drunk photos but the time one a guy set the camera up so it was parallel with the side of of the toilet and shot some nice profile views of his buddy having... *ahem* diarrhea issues. SO GROSS.

We also had some strange guy who would call the lab and start out with a normal conversation, then slowly start asking what are we allowed to print, what are the limits, is nudity okay? if it is, what kind of nudity, and then he would jump to this question "Well what if I was pleasuring myself? would that be okay? How would YOU feel about it?" obviously just calling to get off on our reactions on the phone and hearing us explain what nudity guidelines we had.

Some people are so sick.

I just typed a novel, but I hadn't thought about a lot of my photo lab horror stories in awhile, so it was kinda fun! haha I really don't miss that place except for the discounts and being able to print my own film.

mcpoodle1
mcpoodle1 on Dec 09 '07 at 4:29pm
yeah the discounts and printing my own stuff are a great draw to working here.. and it has really great insurance.. but..

stories:

1) all time fave of gross out photos: this guy had just come back from some sort of S&M/bondage camp where a bunch of guys go to try out new things. so there were graphic photos of all of the "stations" where people could get fisted with a huge biker-dudes fist lubed up with crisco, peed on at the golden shower station, wrapped in seran wrap, clipped by hundreds of little nipple clamps all over there genetalia/body, electrocuted, shat on, etc... there were about 40 rolls of this stuff. and then there would be the shots of all the dudes sitting down at long picnic table-style tables during lunch and dinner.. that was an experience.

we also get a lot of swinger photos, of couples who have sex with each other's partners... mixed in with the kinks/fetishes that go along with that.

there are not too many poop/piss/puke photos, but some celeb photos (whenever there are movies being shot in chicago, the people that actually take photos that are starring in the movie usually bring there stuff in to our lab because it's right down town) .. celebs partying, sight-seeing, etc..

but thanks for sharing! that first story was pretty bad. i don't know how i would've handled that situation..
