FACT: Threadless use to be 70% concept and 30% aesthetic.

A quick calculation tell me it's now 30% concept and 70% aesthetic.

I'd say probably 5 out of the 6 tees this week are defined by their aesthetic, rather than being idea driven. Is this fair or is it the 2 beers I had at lunch?

Discuss.

you can't always relate to concept designs.
ginetteginette

oops, new page rewrite

concept designs are not inherently timeless. don't pretend they are so.

tushe, but you don't always like aesthetic ones either.
ginetteginette
   ginetteginette on Jul 01 '09 at 11:54am
sure, but what's the point of arguing about that. i think we all know trends change. that's the whole point of this blog.

this blog is a concept!
tymn

neither side is right here, that's why both types of design exist.
tymn

IMPO, I think that designing aesthetically is easier than coming up with a great concept.

no way do I agree that aesthetic looks dated at some point.

I think that rule applies to concept based work more than aesthetic work.

like my "where's the beef" shirt - no one gets it anymore

and hogboy, I was not speaking of your comment specifically - I was commenting on a general hum that has been resonating

I think it was entirely clear what Aled mean and we didn't need 3 pages of pointless semantic discussion. But at any rate I would agree and I've been thinking this for a while.

well - aesthetic does get dated... but not to a greater or quicker degree than concept

ISA, I meant "original concept" not parodied until it means nothing.

I think threadless is like a barometer of the cutting edge of tshirt design.

when concept was king - it ruled here at threadless

when illustrative work began to surge, it did so right here.

Other companies like woot and DBH - they are not fluid like this. They are in their little niches and hold on for dear life. Here we see the tides of taste lapping against the shores of talent. quite a dynamic environment

I think that even though those other places have their niches. They are wanting to expand outside of the comfort zone.

Like woot wants to make some illustrated all over shirts that are not funny - who knew?

Me too, people seem to be overthinking stuff just because.

Also, I don't know why some people try to make it black or white when Aled specifically gave the 70/30% example; it's not about concept disappearing, it's about it diluting or however you want to call it.

Also, I think I gave good examples back in page 3 yet everyone choosed to ignore me, you're all assholes.

Going back to the original question: yes I think that fatheed is making an accurate observation. Judging from the last few prints, I would say the trend is leaning towards aesthetic-driven. And if we don't like them, we don't have to buy them.

I thought they were great examples, fatheed had some great ones too.

Also, my problem with watercolours (or any other technique, or CONCEPT!), is that it has turned from a technique into a gimmick to get high scores.

Or at least that's how I see it, I'm sure some will agree and some will disagree.

I have a submission pending right now that has a strong concept but the design is very minimal, it will be interesting to see how it does.

and everytime I sketch a concept based idea my wife ridicules me cause it is such a bad concept. I think it is because i am old and not funny and stuff
