FACT: Threadless use to be 70% concept and 30% aesthetic.

A quick calculation tell me it's now 30% concept and 70% aesthetic.

I'd say probably 5 out of the 6 tees this week are defined by their aesthetic, rather than being idea driven. Is this fair or is it the 2 beers I had at lunch?

Discuss.

i still see it as strongly concept driven, just not the concepts most people are used to.

i don't think there are that many 'only aesthetic' shirts that do that well, apart from the watercolour thing.

They seem like they have a good amount of concept and a good amount of aesthetics. I cannot complain.

strong concepts alone don't get you that far these days.

The best concept driven tees was always what set Threadless apart for me. So it's interesting to see a change.

ArTrOcItY on Jun 29 '09 at 12:39pm
I agree it changed and what you say it's true but I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing. I like both, concept designs and aesthetic designs, and as long as they're well executed, they get my vote.

how would you characterize your designs fatheed?

Maybe they're all based on the concept of aesthetics

Maltzmania

well, i only ask because, I feel like not all of the art can categorized in such cut & dry terms...some art can have both of these characteristics, "aesthetic and concept"...I think...maybe...

What I love about threadless is that the tees are clever, that's what got me buying and the way I design. Though I love the shirts that get printed, they simply aren't my thing. Why? Aesthetic driven.

elemenopy on Jun 30 '09 at 3:11am
Also, A great concept must have great execution, s aesthetic is still very importatnt.

I think 5 out of 6 of this week's prints could have easily been printed at the other place, and I think that's been a constant for a while now.

And I like the other place too, but I liked that Threadless offered a bit more substance over just pretty looking tees.

And yes, the current prints do have good concepts, but are they really good enough that even with a simpler and less "shiny" execution they would have gathered at least a good(not great) amount of attention and attraction?

Also, I'm not saying it's a bad thing, at most it's subjectively bad, but I'm sure for a lot of people it's great.

The pretty detailed shirts are just another trend, next year it may be strark and graphic shirts for all you know. I think there will always be a market for good concepts though, no matter the execution style. Don't sweat it. have another beer.

while i like most of the designs that get printed (usually i've given good scores to at least 4 of the new prints each week), i generally prefer the concept-based designs.

also, my own designs are generally concept-heavy, and i sometimes feel like i can't compete because my designs just aren't as pretty as, say, buko's.
davidfromdallas
   davidfromdallas on Jun 30 '09 at 9:18am
agreed. which is why I get so much more excited about a design when it is executed well AND has a superb idea behind it.

I'm happy about this. I never want people to look at my shirt and laugh. I can make them laugh myself. For me shirts have always been about what's the most visually appealing.

Not neccesarily. I'd say: idea driven. But that's probably too obtuse a definition too.

Tell those fools in the Alumni blog to do another 1nk contest or whatever it was called. One colour only, like Dead Pirates. That came along and people raved about it, but we're still drowning in watercolours. Not that watercolours are nevessarily a bad thing.

my shirt printed this week used a little bit of watercolor (to be really picky, it was mostly acrylic), but i stand by having a good idea driven design.

Umm...I'm pretty sure anything conceived is a concept?

www.merriam-webster.com
concept- something conceived in the mind.

I'm thinking your really referring to jokey, clever or ironic concepts not concepts in general.

maybe not...
