Just did a quick calculation and that's the very least that I've paid to the Post Office/Inland Revenue for the pleasure of recieving stuff from Threadless. The actual figure is probably closer to £500... maybe even £600.

£334.26 worth of reciepts on packages that I've kept and £70+ on a big box of stuff I ordered once (didn't do that again!). And that's without even thinking about the UPS reciepts and the art prints I've recieved.

Considering all this was bought on store credit, I've probably actually spent more of my own money that the average person on recieving stuff from Threadless.

BAD TIMES!

Threadless Europe needed soon, pls. :)

Just did a quick calculation, and that's how much you've earned from getting printed twenty three times at Threadless.

Just sayin'.

Won't Aled's winnings get taxed, though? Or does it not work like that in the UK?

yep the totally unreasonable customs charges really make me reconsider how much i order from threadless. i vote for threadless UK!
angelito
angelito on Jun 28 '09 at 6:00am
YEAHHH my sale shirts arrived yesterday, with another £11 customs charge.

So basically, that's it for me and Threadless. It's been awesome, but I can't afford the customs fees anymore. And the fact that they hold the package for a week or more before telling you you cant have it until you pay more money.

So, unless something amazing comes out that I just have to have, I can't buy from here no mo'.

:/

But the Threadless stuff has been my only income living in London over 2 years. It's not been money to burn.

   nonolarson on Jun 28 '09 at 7:40am
Eww that's a lot of money ! I'm in Paris but I was never charged any customs fees, even for the art print I ordered once, but obviously it works differently in the UK ! Yay for continental Europe :p
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jun 28 '09 at 7:47am
You need to deliver them to Calais then smuggle them through the chunnel in your luggage like low level scumbags get old people to do with cigarettes. They look just like regular t-shirts, they'll never know.

ettiny on Jun 28 '09 at 8:47am
That makes the £12 custom charge I had to pay yesterday on my tees seem very very small!

But I agree, we need a Threadless in Europe!

I live in Spain and don't have to pay any additional charges for receiving Threadless stuff.

custom fees here are bogus too man. when i won i bought a huge load of shirts and had a surprise + 100 dollars i had to pay to receive them. never did that again either.

Is there any way got get around this. Lets say you have someone in the states buy the shirts or w/e for you and in turn they can send it back to you as a "gift"?
fatheed
   fatheed on Jun 28 '09 at 10:47am
Technically, yeah. But far too much hassle.
angelito
angelito on Jun 28 '09 at 11:11am
Also I'd like to stick up for Al - the money he's won has been his living - just like us, the dude's gotta pay his rent, and buy his girrrl nice thangs ;) He's also given away a substantial amount of GC's to bloggers, so he's allowed to be bummed out like the rest of us.

I know it's all in jest, so don't think I'm angry - just, all the customs charges suck, even if you are a gazillionaire with a bionic drawing hand.

:)

thats sucks.. your prize money is you're prize money.. and when you buy something and pay for shipping that should be it. I don't understand customs fees but it sounds like government blackmail to me. You've already paid for your item.. why should you have to pay for it again?

This isn't meant to come off in a negative way or anything, but why haven't you had some other source of income (such as part time or full-time employment somewhere/anywhere) for the last two years?

That's a completely fine answer, I'm a student myself, and I can only find time for a job during the summer. It's tough as hell. I was merely curious, that's all.
ginetteginette
   ginetteginette on Jun 28 '09 at 3:19pm
i feel bad though for not even having a shitty part time or once a week job as a student though. my job resume sucks because of it.
professorE
professorE on Jun 28 '09 at 7:48pm
Okay, then, let's try this. You could rebel against the government and start your own country. I've never once paid customs on a Threadless shirt.

I hear you, ginette. Last summer between semesters I worked as a checkout-clerk at a grocery store, part-time. Terrible, terrible job. My parents had to always spot me a little extra each month just so I could make rent (and I live in a shitty apartment). Before that, I had nothing on my resume', so I faked a bunch of things to get the grocery store job.

Now, this summer, I applied to about 30 different jobs in downtown Halifax (where I live), and was hired for none.

Thankfully my University hired me and two of my friends (all film students) to design the new online video-advertising campaign for the school, so I'm making enough money for rent, and actually doing something that's close to what I enjoy. But fuck, the last two or three summers before this one were absolute hell.

Doesn't change the fact I have zero time for work during semesters though. Now that's hell.

that sucks man. :( I would hate to pay customs charges.

just like I hate filling out customs forms when I mail international customers things.

this is America, god dammit. if I wanted to just go around writing things, I'd be a school teacher, or a food critic, or a break dancing gang member circa low-budget Hollywood, 1982.

this is me rallying, aled. threadless Europe all the way!

I tend to order shirts in 1s and 2s and pay the extra $9 shipping which is cheaper than the £12 customs. so far I haven't been charged but my max single purchase has been $30 which may be why. I don't think I buy as many tshirts as you guys do so I may be getting away with it easier.

as for customs sucking, this takes the cake:
i once ordered off amazon.com, had to pay £12 customs only to receive my package and find out amazon had sent the wrong item. I had to send it back and then got stung by another £12 when they sent me a replacement. no one - post office or amazon - was willing to understand the ludicrousness of charging me £12 for an item i returned and then chargin me £12 again when I got the replacement. I couldn't get either of them to even consider a refund.
wankers, all of them.
