This design is kind of a prequel to an earlier design of mine called ‘Elephants Hunt In Pairs’. That design scored really well, and when I came up with the concept for ‘Rhinos…’ I wanted to recapture some of that and improve on it slightly. When I started this design the crit section had just been created and I thought it would be a good idea to drop the sketch into a critique and see how it did. The feedback was great and the process of the critique not only shaped and improved the design, but also was a good way to break down the creative process and showcase how I worked. The premise in this concept is a familiar one and the same as the ‘Elephants…’ design: ‘the hunter becomes the hunted’. Although this has an obvious comedic tone, I guess this appeals to people’s sense of justice as well as their sense of irony. Aside from this – there is also the fact that hunting continues to threaten many species (the Black Rhino, particularly) with extinction and that although I usually like to avoid politics, there is a real issue behind the design. Did I mention it got printed in Kids sizes?! I was inexplicably pleased with that.
