How about something simple, something small, something dark and something classic on your body? ..hope you like that!

I don't know Jemae? It's a beautiful illo but as you say, "dark". It will be interesting to see what the reaction is. Still, it's intriguing, makes you think what a terrible thing it is to cage a bird. An empathetic feeling towards the bird would get my vote, maybe others will see it the same way. Anyway, great rendering and a good (relevant) use of the specialty ink, not just a superficial gimmick. Cheers!

This is still less dark than The Killing Tree (which Threadless printed). I took the design to mean exactly what quister said... which could also function as a metaphor as well (obsessively surrounding yourself with acquired wealth can be a golden cage of sorts).

OK, I thought of this poem when I first saw your illo. Don't know if it will help you but it might be a good opening comment/reference that helps convey your concept.

Part of Maya Angelou's poem, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"

"The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing"

So, what's a caged bird to do?
