STOLEN DESIGN??? Please help!

I received this email this morning (from a kind person)

"Dear Sir,

Maybe i just get to the point because my english is awful . Okay, first of all I'm from Indonesia and also a graphic designer, and i've been admire your work on threadless (eventhough, i never bought any one of your design because they can't deliver it to Indonesia ;p)

My question is: Is it true that you have been giving permission to use your design to designer in Indonesia? Because one of T-shirt designer in Indonesia has claimed that they already have permission to use your design, and share the profit of selling those shirt with you.

Is it true? Or this is just another plagiator who take advantage of someone else hard work?

Okay, i'm waiting for your reply (for the sake of creativity!).

It's not only me, but also Glenn's, John's and Simon's. They claimed that they were given permission to sell our designs in Indonesia and the truth is I have never been approached by this people!

Any suggestion on how to proceed with this. I have to be honest, as a new designer, I don't actually know how to handle the situation.

This is awful. I counted at least 6 of those designs are from Threadless submissions or prints.

i can't read it, but i think honestly these people can't be making much money at all. their store is in a forum? thats going to make them hard to track to make them stop...

Send them a very nasty letter telling them to cease their illegal operations of selling copywritten images. (not that that would stop them, but atleast they will know you are aware)

I dont think they manage to get a lot from the forum. They only have like 6-10 people buying for each designs. According to the seller, he was authorized by the offical designer (which he claimed was located somewhere in Kuala Lumpur).

Jemae, why not try to contact Threadless staff for help. Becuase they are stolen the printed shirt. I think Threadless will take action for this.

dude it sucks... but IP/copyright gets walked all over in countries like that...

just ask microsoft .... probably 1 in 100 windows installs is legit in some of those countries...

i got sorta lost trying to figure out what the hell they were talking about but i think they are selling the ripoff shirts for about $6~ U.S.

obviously not exactly apples to apples but here is what the bsa has to say on Indonesia computer software piracy (87% piracy rate according to the BSA)

Hey man, this is rough, and they have no laws over there so it's all a bit glum from you're side, if we do a fund raiser maybe we could hire some ninja assassins to go over there and kick their butts!

In all seriousness though hopefully threadless can do something, if not maybe get people to start sending them E-mails and swamp them with hate.

I imagine that they are just really bad copies that have been taken from the product page. Imitation is the sincerest, and most annoying form of flattery.

WHOA... that sucks. Looks like they're ALL threadless designs, some of which haven't even been printed yet.

I gave cbuchholz a heads up about this too 'cause it looks like one of his is on there. Maybe if you all gang up and do something together, the design thieves will do something about it. Good luck with that...

It sucks, but there really is not much you can do about it. At the end of the day - your artwork is being produced elsewhere in the world. Despite the fact you don't get credited like you do on Threadless - it's kinda cool in a round-a-bout way. You just have to accept its part of the art industry and be smug that someone has to use your work because they're completely void of creativity and talent themselves.
