So I was wondering, this came up in another blog, about the differences in how I speak being from Chi-town, compared to how the rest of the world speaks.

Do you say gym shoes when speaking of any athletic pair of shoes?

Do you say soda?
Or pop?
Or perhaps sodapop?

Do you ever use gaping?
or gapers delay or a gapers block?

just wondering oh and please say where you are from in your post.

Thanks loves.

I say sneakers.

As far as drinks go . . . usually I just say specifically what I am talking about. Diet Pepsi, Sprite Zero, Coke, whatever.

Never said pop. Ever. I've used the word soda before, but rarely.

And I have no idea what gaping is.

canceromega on Mar 03 '07 at 9:34pm
I say tennis shoes.

When referring to "soda", I just say Coke.

Gape?

I'm from Texas.

gaping as in "gaping hole"? haha, I doubt it.. so, no.

I say soda and sometimes pop if I slip up.

I call them sneakers or tennis shoes.. usually sneakers I guess.

I'm from Columbus, OH.
sectionbb
sectionbb on Mar 03 '07 at 9:36pm
Used to just say "coke" like canceromega, but that confuses people so now I just say the specific drink.
sectionbb
sectionbb on Mar 03 '07 at 9:37pm

sneakers

soda

what's a gapers?
Heavenly Devil
Heavenly Devil on Mar 03 '07 at 9:42pm
turn off the light

and gaping means looking or watching

so a gapers delay is when there is a accident and people drive slow to look at it.
margolove
margolove on Mar 03 '07 at 9:42pm
oh. We call that "rubbernecking" 'round these here parts.
Heavenly Devil
Heavenly Devil on Mar 03 '07 at 9:43pm

We never use tennis shoes and rarely use sneakers.

sunlover1975 on Mar 03 '07 at 9:44pm

I'm with Margo - Rubbernecking.

Though I NEVER do that.
Heavenly Devil
Heavenly Devil on Mar 03 '07 at 9:46pm
hehe that's such a funny word.
sectionbb
sectionbb on Mar 03 '07 at 9:46pm
To a southerner everything is a coke. Then you have to ask what kind?

Pretty stupid.
Heavenly Devil
Heavenly Devil on Mar 03 '07 at 9:47pm
Pepsi called coke? hehehe

this is so odd, just the fact of how different it is
sunlover1975
sunlover1975 on Mar 03 '07 at 9:48pm
heavenly: we just call it soda. if it's coca cola, then we call it coke. but otherwise it's just soda :)

I was born in New Jersey and they are ADDICTED to rubbernecking. There could be traffic backed up for days and you wonder what the hell happend. there must have been a gruesome accident, if the traffic is THIS bad. Days later ;) you get to the "scene" and you find out, it's just some person pulled over to the side, fixing their tire, and EVERYONE slowed down to look...
margolove
margolove on Mar 03 '07 at 9:48pm
I'm from Columbus, Ohio, sunlover :)

Although my parents are imports from Pittsburgh and Philadelphia so I'm sure I speak a little differently than most people around here.
sectionbb
sectionbb on Mar 03 '07 at 9:49pm

canceromega
canceromega on Mar 03 '07 at 9:55pm
It's funny you should mention accents. I was discussing this with my mother today, and I thought I talked pretty normal, but I apparently don't.
sectionbb
sectionbb on Mar 03 '07 at 9:55pm

I've lived in Texas my entire life. I know I don't have a Southern accent, but my mother (who's from Mexico) says I do have an accent. I just thought that was weird because nobody has ever told me I do before.
sectionbb
sectionbb on Mar 03 '07 at 9:57pm

sunlover1975
sunlover1975 on Mar 03 '07 at 9:59pm
yeah, I used to notice especially when I was at work and we had to make a phone call to a southern office. not just the accent, but they just moved at a far more relaxed (and probably healthier pace), meanwhile in NYC, we're going at great speeds
