I recently posted this photo in flickr, and in one of the comments left someone said :great clouds although they look very bland, there is a good deal of difference in the cloud colours which could be tweeked in pp along with maybe a touch more brightness

Im not really great at photoshop, I can work most things out slowly but what the hell is pp? anyone got any idea?

I guess the comment means process the image, but it's a vague term...I've put your photo through my personal favourite process to enhance contrasts.

If you've never used the Image - Adjustments - Curves function, this is a great process that gives you a lot of room to muck around with highlights, midtones, and shadows etc.

oh i think post-processing makes the most sense. it doesnt much matter exactly what it stands for, i think it is just refering to editing it.

Levels
- Click Auto
- Select the black dropper and experiment clicking it on the darkest points of the photos until you're happy with the new black point. If you hold down Alt and move the black slider slightly to the right, it will show the darkest points on the image anyway, so you can use that as a guide.
- Do the same with the white dropper/lightest point. Alt thing works too , sliding the white slider to the left.

Hope that makes sense. It's not as complicated as I mkae it sound, and once you've done it a couple of times, it will take you a matter of seconds.

Fuck, that cut off most of what I said. I can't be bothered to type it all again, but I'll find you a link to a great step-by-step guide...

Levels
- Click Auto
- Hold Alt and move the black slider slightly to the right until some black appears on your photo. Let go, then select the black eyedropper and click it on your image where the black appeared
- Do the same thing but with the white slider, to the left, until black appears. Select the white eyedropper and click it where the black appeared.

You can experiment more once you get used to it, the Alt slider thing basically shows you where the darkest and lightest areas on your image are. You can click the droppers around your image to experiment as you like.

OK -Third try. The first step, which will slightly alter your default levels, you'll only need to do once ever.

Go to Levels. Click Options. Click Shadows, and set RGB to 12,12,12. OK. Click Highlights and set RGB to 245,245,245. Click OK, Check Save As Defaults and click OK.

Once you've done this once, you can follow the steps I put above every time you're making basic adjustments.

Slight blurring and then resharpening is what I do, after manually smoothing all the major parts.

I posted a sharpening tutorial blog, but don't think I have the Before and After images online anymore.

ah cool Ill check it out there. How is your back feeling?
Bramish

The pain's actually in my leg rather than my back. It's been relatively ok for a couple of weeks. Still hurts of course, but I can sit down now, which is nice, and I haven't been completely disabled by it for a while. I have half a day of travelling on Sunday, which I'm dreading, but hopefully it'll stay bearable for Christmas at least. Thanks for asking.

No Problemo. Make sure you have plenty of rest stops on Sunday, look after it.
