For the 2008 Academy Awards, the nominations for best picture are:

There Will Be Blood
Juno
No Country For Old Men
Micheal Clayton
Atonement

Out of curiosity, I'm wondering what threadless peeps think, so it's polling time!

Just say which of the five films you think should win, and also please write which of the 5 you've seen.

PS- RIP Heath Ledger, a brilliant actor who will be missed and remembered.

fuck the Oscars. how Johnny Greenwood's original score for There Will Be Blood doesn't deserve even a nomination boggles my mind.

I've seen Juno & Atonement... I guess I'll say Atonement. Juno was great, but definitely not the best of the year.

oh... There Will Be Blood was the best movie of 2007... who knows what they'll pick

Whichever one had Will Smith.

I've only seen Juno.

Apparently that score isn't eligible because not enough of it was written specifically for the movie.

I've only seen No Country... and I could definitely see it winning.

Having seen none of those, I'm going to say There Will Be Blood. I've heard lots and lots of good things about it.

Javier Bardem should definitely get something.

if TWBB doesn't win, I'll be ok if No Country For Old Men wins.

I'm weirded out that Michael Clayton got a nom

I haven't seen There Will Be Blood yet, but I'm guessing it will be that or No Country for Old Men. Those are safe predictions, though. Atonement was good but I don't think it will beat out those two.

I've only seen No Country For Old Men and Juno, but I know that out f the five, NCFOM is my pick. I've always been a Cohen brothers fan, and this was one of their best.

I definitely plan on seeing There Will Be Blood, but Atonement looks a snooze fest (period piece ANDchick flick), and if I see Micheal Clayton, I'm only supporting George Clooney's belief that he's the greatest human being of all time.
margolove
margolove on Jan 22 '08 at 9:23pm
Antonement wasn't really that much of a chick flick, ahaha
margolove
margolove on Jan 22 '08 at 9:24pm
and you'd be surprised about how they parlay the "period piece" thing... it gets put into a different context at the end

Yeah, my jaw pretty much dropped when I heard about the Johnny Greenwood thing! What crap.

What did people think of Juno? I hated it personally, it was like a forgettable episode of freaks and geeks. Also, it was so fucking pretentious and snobby, what with her always talking about how cool her tastes in movies and music were.
iDanSimpson
iDanSimpson on Jan 22 '08 at 9:27pm
i thought Juno was an exceptionally written and acted film.

agreed. it was a wonderful film... just not the best of the year.

I think that "pretentious" is a word most people use to describe things when they can't think of a more exact criticism and want to lazily dislike something.

No Country For Old Men was fantastic. my pick so far but I haven't seen There Will Be Blood yet. hoping to catch it this weekend.

yeah, I do not think it will be winning best anything. I was also a little surprised at the supporting actress nom for the Saoirse Ronan, although she did do a great job.

It's pretty definite that Juno won't win. "It's prize is the nomination," essentially.
Chipmnk
Chipmnk on Jan 22 '08 at 9:30pm
Yeah, I'm kind of confused as to why Juno is put into that list (not that it's a bad movie by any standards).

I normally agree on pretentious being a stupid criticism, but hearing somebody talk about how cool Iggy Pop and obscure horror directors are on screen fits the bill pretty well.

frankly... i liked the film. it was funny and enjoyable, however, i was surprised when i saw that it got a nomination. it was a good film, but it wont win.

i doubt juno will get win, it was good but to be that kind of comedy and the oscars hating comedies its not that good

im actually kinda suprised it was nominated

there will be blood should win everything always, daniel day lewis is AMAZING

No Country For Old Men was fantastic. my pick so far but I haven't seen There Will Be Blood yet. hoping to catch it this weekend.

those are my two favorite films of 2007. having seen both twice, I can say that TWBB grew on my the second time (even though it blew me away the first) while No Country lost a little bit of it's steam.

TWBB is, just as the advertisements claim, a masterpiece.
iDanSimpson
iDanSimpson on Jan 22 '08 at 9:34pm
having seen TWBB, I now consider Daniel Day-Lewis the best actor of my lifetime.
margolove
margolove on Jan 22 '08 at 9:35pm
so this is perhaps odd to mention, but I think the cinematography race will be really tight.

Atonement and No Country for Old Men were both so incredibly visually stunning, and There Will Be Blood looked amazing, too.

o but im extremely happy that PT Anderson got a nomination for best director, i was pissed that he got a snub from the golden globes

i love all his movies

opifan64

I'll definitely see it then. I saw NCFOM twice too, lol. I sort of agree with you that it lost some of its visceral impact upon second viewing, although I enjoyed the opportunity to be able to sit back and actually study the craft and direction without being as caught up in the story.

o and although paul dano was overshadowed in TWBB he put on such an amzing performance that he deserved at least a nomination

I think Daniel Day-Lewis is an incredible actor, but from the trailers I've seen of TWBB it looked like he was possibly teetering on the brink of overacting, but maybe it's different when you see the whole film

i liked it but its every indie film wrapped into one

No Country or There Will Be Blood better win. I haven't seen TWBB, but I haven't heard a single bad thing about it. Juno was very good, but it's not best picture worthy.

Michael Clayton was nominated? I barely even remember hearing about that.

And fuck Atonement. I don't care if it is a decent movie; it already robbed the Golden Globes.

"Falling Slowly" better win for Best Original Song. It's up against three songs from Enchanted (which were fun and amusing, but not nearly as amazing as every song from Once) and something else.

maybe not overshadowed but i mean the last scene even when hes screaming all eyes are on DDL, which im pretty sure was intended

I'm seeing TWBB this weekend, and if Dan's ravings are any indication, it should rule.

I guess I'm being harsh on Atonement, but I am sick of seeing Knightly in pre-Cold War love stories.

Margo liked Atonement. Which means I don't love her anymore.
