Why is the 2 a superscript and not a subscript? Im not sure what H^2 means, but H2 is a gas at room temp so I doubt thats what is ment. Any thoughts? Its probably something real simple that Im just over looking or it just might be a something random. I dont see it being something random because the first tube has what looks like a strain or stock number that would be found in a QC culture of a bacteria.

If you couldnt tell, Im a microbiologist

I may be wrong, but it is possible that it means nothing, and is just supposed to look sciencey. It's a cartoony t-shirt design.

interesting find...what is H^2??

It could just be H squared... whatever H is.

But it's more likely to be a mistake, yeah.
Krakaboom
   Krakaboom on Jun 19 '07 at 11:04am
Or it could just stand for 'Hagit Hash'... the designer.

good catch kraka, you're probably right!

Dirkje on Jun 19 '07 at 11:10am
In chemistry they use a number with a + or - as a superscript to explain the ionisation of it. Then it's also wrong 'cause H is 1+.

Hmm, sounds a bit nerdy right?

Weeeell.... The hydrogen isotope Deuterium is usually written as ^2H (superscript 2 followed by an H). I don't know. Maybe? Possibly?

yeah hydrogen gas would have made more sense i cant buy this shirt since i work in a science lab and people would think im an idiot for having H^2 on it
Jebi
Jebi on Jun 19 '07 at 6:44pm
I agree with svnflovver. I was so excited when I saw the thumbnail for this shirt, but then on closer inspection noticed all the flaws. I am a Chemistry nut. It is like not buying the 'I

(cut me off) love color' shirt because it is the American spelling, and I (an Aussie) spell it colour.

I would've liked to see the shirt done well. H2O doing a mexican 'wave', Hg with a hunchback for its meniscus etc.

Pity.

that would have been soooo much better jebi

Maybe the oxidation number? Even though oxidation numbers of standalone elements are zero, it's the only thing in chemistry written as a superscript without a charge.
either_oar
either_oar on Jun 19 '07 at 10:34pm
maybe, just MAYBE, it's just there. for no real reason apart from looking sciency. and to trigger nerdy reactions like these??
rclee21
rclee21 on Jun 19 '07 at 11:02pm
Well, considering the designer's name is Hagit Hashimshony.......... you see?
Monkeybucks
Monkeybucks on Jun 20 '07 at 12:29am
Trilabeela, the oxidation number of H is always 2. But I doubt that's what it was about anyway, oxidation numbers are booorrriinngg. :P

Also, I could be wrong about that anyway. But I'm pretty sure that H is always 2.

Hmm...this sounds kinds silly. But the little cartoony guy in the tube with the H2 kinda looks like he has gas. Maybe I'm reading into it too much though.

WOW! I didn't even notice that... thanks for pointing it out. I don't believe I will be buying this shirt anymore.

Ironically, this should would only appeal to those who aren't really into science. This shirt is analogous to a slogan shirt expressing love for grammar without being grammatical; it just doesn't work unless sarcasm was the intent. I don't think this shirt even looks "sciency" in light of this mistake.

you're reading it upside down.

it's actually Z^H, but the Z is written in l33t sp33k.

Unless it was a newly created notation to identify the cute creature inside, but it resembles hydrogen gas too much to be interpreted that way without one (who actually knows a bit of science) going "out-of-the-way."

dudes, its more than likely how he signed his name while maintaining a sciency vibe...if you want real science go buy a fucking text book. Art imitates, but hardly replicates life.
rain_cloud
rain_cloud on Jun 23 '07 at 10:14am
I agree that art imitates, but does not replicate, life. Thus, the quality of art is dependent upon how well it imitates life (even through genres like surrealism).

I hardly think anyone thinks it actually replicates life, so it's a bit of a "straw man" you have there, Ste7en.

Anyway, good insight there: you're probably right, it was the way he signed his name. Hadn't noticed that, but it's pretty clever. I'm reconsidering placing one in my cart. Now when people point it out, I can tell them that it is the artist's signature.

even if it isn't the artist's signature, i agree with rain cloud. if only to cover up the H2 mistake, i'm going to say it is. :-)

Hydrogen atoms usually travels in pairs, the 2 should be just below the H not just above. Its nothing serious though.

Maybe it's for the designer's name... or maybe it's a tee shirt and not a text book. It's really not a big deal.

I bought the shirt, and I love it. I work in a lab. They loved it, too. Whine a little more, guys. We're all so impressed.

Great shirt.

I hadn't noticed the H^2, but considering all the creatures in the test tubes aren't real, I would say it's entirely acceptable. If any of you don't want to buy this shirt because of that, chances are you didn't really want it that much anyway. More for the rest of us :).
