so I'm researching studying abroad through the UC system's education abroad program and I need some motivation.

I am a communications major, which limits my options a bunch, but have any of you guys gone abroad and what were your experiences like?

Um whats the uc system of education abroad program?

Sorry I'm a brit, so I'm just going through my university to a partner one.

Personally I havent done it yet and I'm of to america for three months but what I can tell you is to do it, its extremely worth it.

See at my university in the first semester we have exchange students (mainly from america and canada) and they lived in my accomodation so I got to know a hell of alot of them.

They've all had absolutly amazing times, for a start through the program you get to make friends from all over the world, I've not even gone on exchange and I have offers to stay all over canada and quite a few spots on the eastern sea board.

The friends you make are amazing, for a start you'll be making friends with people from all over the states, canada and even europe but then (assuming you're going to the uk) theres all the british people to meet.

We've all made lasting friendships.

The internationals traveled, and boy did they travel, they went all over the uk and one of my friends even spent 20 days traveling europe.

All the americans and canadians have said the work load over here is significatly lower than what they do at home, I have friends who do 9 hours of class a week, so we party hard right now I'm averaging going out 6 nights a week.

But I'm not going to lie to you, roughly speaking everything going to cost double what it does at home, at the moment the exchange rate is holding around £1 = $2.

My advice to you would be to save alot of money, take the oppertunity to travel but also try to avoid just hanging around with the exchange students, one of the things I have heard people said they regreted was not making friends with enough brits, after all they did come to experience the culture.

thanks stubby...I've actually considered heading to london or bath...i know I'd have a great time and it IS way expensive. Plus I'm kinda thinking I'd want to go somewhere with a culture differing more drastically from my own. Its definitely not out of the picture though.

The UC system is the University of California, my system of universities (I go to the one in Santa Barbara, CA), and education abroad is the program within those universities organizing programs for studying in other countries

i have a friend in architecture who did a study abroad thing in mexico city and loved it. personally i would only go to a country where i know how to speak the language but i've no desire to do a study abroad program because that would narrow it down to english speaking countries, france and italy and i've lived in both france and italy.

mostly everyone in prague spoke english, especially the younger people.

the architecture is simply amazing there.

Fair enough. We are similar I mean we did create you're country but the exchange people did say there was a fair amount of cultural difference here, maybe not as much as going to the contient but enough for them to notice it.

I'm sure there is, but I've also been there twice and my sister lived there for a few years, so I've got SOME exposure. I donno though...it looks more and more appealing all the time.

it seems like people universally recommend studying abroad, its just a bitch to organize and get out there and actually DO it.

plus theres the added factor of the girlfriend, which I know i shouldn't be considering, but its still a factor

At the end of the day its you're decision and where ever you go you will have an amazing time the hardest part of it is the saving money, I dont know about you're university but mines highly supportive with the process.

My problem is saving the money to do it.

Everyone I've met who've done exchange say its the greatest experience they've ever had.

My advice to you would be to go to the department after the holiday, get some info and ask if they can put you in touch with some of the people who went last/this year. They'll be able to tell you alot of helpful stuff.

I dont know when you're going but I'm going in august next year so my deadline to hand in my application form was december 15th and the process to go to america (getting visas) will take about a year so you might need to hurry up.

the experience of living in a foreing country alone, will outweigh any college 'education' you could study.
