A Tokyo based clothing company is doing a t-shirt competition and the top prize is about $9,000, blogged about it here:

Kind of a bummer that you have to submit designs via snail mail but the prize money is pretty good.

never enter a contest where you have to pay to enter

i'm skeptical about this contest ($9,000 for a t-shirt?), but not as skeptical as i could be, because i have a friend who got printed with this site... hmm...

I don't think you have to pay to enter, unless you consider a postage stamp paying :-)

that's good, but you still have to be careful. many -- possibly the majority -- of contests are scams.

just check out the company to make sure it's on the level

it seems weird to offer that kind of money, whereas i'm sure they'd get a similar response to a prize amount thousands of dollars less.

but whatever. good luck to all who enter!

It does seem like a hella big prize, maybe they sell a shitload of t-shirts. It seems like a legit clothing company in Japan, take a look at their site, I have no association with them.

They want the original AI/PSD files in print ready format. (raises red flags)... that's a good way to get ripped off.

But their store products are pretty weak.. maybe in Japan they don't know about Threadless quality yet ;) Sonmi should enter!

Looks like they like urban outfitters, seems like they are as you say "big in japan"

Obviously I'm pretty late on this one, but Graniph are definitely legit.

I went to two of their stores in Harajuku and Shibuya in Tokyo a couple of weeks ago. They sell some of the greatest tees I've ever seen, though unfortunately their sizes run SS-L, but I still bought one anyway (for my brother).

They didn't really seem like the kind of company that would rip you off (even making sure I realised the tee I bought wouldn't fit me), so I'd say that if you're a great graphic artist then it might be worth firing off something to them.
