Hey kids! Way back in the early 80's through the mid 90's, there was a wondrous invention called an "arcade". Oh, the fun and excitement of entering that world of bleeps and bloops, the lines forming behind certain games going around the room at times just to get a crack at the guy who has been defeating his/her opponents and playing off the same twenty five cents for three days in a row, the banging of the basketball mini-hoop game in the corner and the inevitable fight that breaks out when someone's basketball takes a wild hop and melds with the back of someone else's head who was on the verge of a new high score. These were wild, unhinged, severely geeky and chaotic times, and I miss them more than anything when going to any mall bigger than three stores who used to have one.

An example of one of these ancient "arcades", where even the man with a three ton backup of machismo could control the fate of a yellow character with a bow in her head and not feel the need to puff out his chest or watch out for finger pointing laughter and roundhouse kicks to the face.

Arcade games were so beloved, they even made many many horrible fucking shows about them!

My idea of what heaven looks like as a child, minus the creepy old dude with his ass soiling the pride of Galaga and his paws all over the random arcade chicks who would hang out and party with the dudes, usually kicking our asses at the hardest games. Yup, equality was just a joystick joust away folks.

Having arcade quality visuals and beyond and blowing the brains off of cursing and heavily annoying fifteen year olds from the comfort of our ass grooves in our living room seats is cool, but there will always be a special place in my heart for the face-to-face competition of the digital public Roman lion fight that was real live arcades.

A sampling of my favs:

The most influential arcade game ever for me. It filled my imagination and my dreams with the thought of controlling the most bumbly, gawky and awkward knight in dorky armor on a quest to die a million comical and highly aggravating ways. It was like being put into cartoon form and slapped in a game!

Shooters :

Jurassic Park

House of the Dead and House of the Dead 2 (fuck the ones afterwards...fighting zombies with machine guns? How cheap.

Area 51. What a piece of shit shooter game, static graphics, hammy idea, but what a fun one in terms of interactive elements (you could pretty much shoot EVERYTHING) and trying to get 100 shots in a row was always a good time.

Operation Wolf

Virtua Cop

Pinball:

Theater of Magic. That magnetic multiplayer box in the center of the game = magic in ball whacking form.

Jurassic Park that movie and book made some REALLY good arcade games no matter what genre.

Stargate

Attack From Mars. Because who doesn't love little green aliens wiggling their four arms off at you during mini games?

Fighters:

Killer Instinct. C-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-ombo Breaker-r-r-r-r-r!

Mortal Kombat II

Primal Rage. Kinda the best idea ever for a fighting game, especially when you could chomp down on the little Neanderthal peeps for points and energy.

Sorry, I wasn't much of a Street Fighter II fan until it came to the SNES, hence I just watched others dominate one another and slap buttons with the ferocity of untamed tigers.

Racers:

Outrun. Racing games didn't get much cooler than picking your synth tuney radio station and wrecking your Ferrari over and and over again with some hot chick's hair blowing in the wind, never leaving your side no matter how many times your power car rolls over.

Virtua Racing. I NEVER quote a video game magazine (until now), but as EGM once said, "Never before and never again will a bunch of uncolored polygons fascinate us as much as this." Besides Starfox, they're right.

Daytona USA. Day-tone-aaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!

Power Drift. There's just something about the screen turning into batman sideways shot mode on a hairpin turn and your character turning around and giving you the thumbs up that i really enjoyed about this game. Let's face it, Sega made the best racing games.

Roadblasters. A driving AND shooting game wrapped into one kick-ass futuristic package!

Others:

Rampage.

The Simpsons. I STILL find and play the shit out of this game at movie theaters and etc. Four player perfection and probably my favorite movie/tv show arcade conversion (maybe Goldeneye but that's not arcade!).

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Four player games man...they rocked the aracde world in the early 90's.

Ms. Pac Man. Forget equality, Ms. Pacman told the MR. to stay at home while she does all the work sporting multiple mazes and way better challenges. Plus, who didn't think a female pizza pie with a piece missing was kinda hot? Anyone? Eh...Anyone???

Robotron.

Punch Out! BODY BLOW BODY BLOW!!!! There was nothing like being a green wired looking boxing champ!

Guilty Pleasure:

Whatever this arm wrestling game used to be.

Game I'm Most Likely To Beat Margo at in Some Future Tournament to the Death:

The Cyclone!

And so many more but i'm tired of doing this.

What were your favs of the long-gone but hopefully never forgotten era of stand-up video games?

Oh, and that four wheeled off-road game!

i dont think there was ever an official "arcade" place around here... the skating rink (back when skating backwards on chunky wheeled roller skates gave you street cred) had a massive selection of these games that cost next to nothing to play.

I can't believe someone beat me to posting Revolution X. lol @ how impossibly terrible that game was.

My favorite arcade games were Raiden:

and Street Fighter II, and Marvel vs Capcom. And I always loved air hockey.

But yeah, arcades are still around kind of. In bowling alleys and movie theaters and such. They just seem to revolve around DDR and other beat matching based games now.

Here's my faves from the days when my brother and
I would walk about 2 miles to get to the local arcade.
It wasn't part of a mall - it was just a building full of
arcade games which was later turned into a deep pizza restaraunt.

Firetruck ( two people have their own steering wheel and
would attempt to drive a firetruck on a black & white screen )

Phoenix ( an improvement on Space Invaders before Galaga )

Tempest ( Yay for vector graphics! )

Moon Patrol

Donkey Kong

Crazy Climber

Gravitar - the vector game like Asteroids, but with color and
various missions so the gameplay was much better. You
had to pick up fuel as you played and gravity plays a part
on each mission.

Berzerk & FRENZY "Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!"

The laserdisc video game called Cliff Hanger that played
like Dragon's Lair, but it used scenes from Lupin III anime.

I stunk at Defender, Stargate, Tron, Joust, SpyHunter,
Robotron 2084, Frogger, Dragon's Lair, Zaxxon, Xevious,
Star Castle, Galaxian/Galaga, and Football (the one with
the rollerballs people would spin like crazy), but I loved
watching people who were good at them.

This is an awesome blog FA, I'm feeling so nostalgic now! I really miss the arcades too... when I was younger I used to hang out at this mom-and-pop greasy spoon called "Mike's Steak and Burger" at the bottom of our street. It was a really rough time in my life (parents divorcing etc.) so this was like an electronic oasis, a place to escape to. Anyway, it was kind of a hidden because you had to go through the restaurant first and then there was a door near the back that led to this "mini-arcade". Mike himself was a dour figure, and whenever I said "hi Mike, how are you doing?" he'd always reply "lousy", everytime! But I could relate. Anyway, his arcade was awesome. He always had 6 or 7 of the best video games, and I spent untold hours (and quarters) in that place. Classic games like "Asteroid", "Galaga" and "Donkey Kong" were my early favorites, but the one game I truly mastered was "Defender". I could play for hours on a single quarter and often a little audience gathered round, cheering me on. Ok, sorry for that sad little slice of my life, but I miss it all the same.

Donkey Kong and Frogger while my mom and dad did their bowling league thing, omg, remember bowling leagues and bowling alleys with the arcades for the kids?

But for me it will always be pinball. One quarter could last me forever.

Spyhunter (I think, the one with the car?) was one my brother and I would fight over.

Occassionally I'd play mortal combat.

OH yeah! bubbles (with the rollerball) and centipede. I liked that rolling ball thing much better than a joystick.

You do still see the occasional videogames arcade about in the UK, but they're not the same- mostly at fairs or at like bowling alleys. You quite often see an ancient machine in the corner of a chip shop though, coated in a dusty layer of fudgy grease
marblecargirl
marblecargirl on Feb 15 '08 at 10:35am
When I was 16/17 I worked in this dollar theater that had Police Trainer and Tekken 2 in the lobby. Since it was a dollar theater, no one ever came, and we didn't have to do crap. Also, we had the keys to the machines, so we would just recycle the quarters.

Feck that was the best job ever!

These are such great stories!

Igo, hahahaha, that's amazing man. I totally can relate to this little places in our youth that felt like the entire world to us. You'd find them and enjoy them and time would just stand still. I was never too good at defender, I think i always went to fast to the left and right and got blown up. In some ways, twitch-fest high score games like that one are really the best examples of what arcade games and video games in general can do and show a gigantic amount of skill in terms of hand-eye coordination, endurance, and enemy recognition.

I knew someone was gonna mention double Dragon! I played the crap outta that game, but only after it hit the NES in a much watered-down formation.

Baron, yeah, every once in a while you see something like that in America too, and the only real arcades left are actually family entertainment centers, like Chuck E Cheese or other places that have skee ball and maybe go-kart and serve pretty crappy pizza. Also, the adult centers like Dave and Busters where they have all the games that cost like three bucks to play like flight simulators and gigantic shoot em up games.

Does anyone remember this shooting game that you could play with eight people at once? You went into this mini-theater, and it was projected on the screen and people lined up in a row almost like a shooting carnival to play it....I remember it from the huge entertainment centers. Arcades DO exist, but they're all like this now, with just the most expensive and gimmicky ones left. It's not like where there were a zillion awesome ones lined up.

Oh, and if i see this shitty game in the front of one more department store, I'm gonna take a sledghammer to it!

Fucking Arctic Thunder. Finally, the Cruis N' USA of snowmobile-ing.

And another fav arcade game from back in the diz-ay:

I think this was called Alpine Ski or something? Before snowboarding overtook my favorite way to speed down snow (with the exception of Christmas Vacation's oil coated snow sled), this awesome game really had a great sensation of hitting the powder....and then jumping off thousand mile high cliffs and landing safely without even bruising your knees and/or kidneys!

Man, ISA and i don't cross over in pinball at all...but i never played the Indiana Jones or Star Wars Trilogy ones. Adams Family was ok, but it was all about ramps and nothing else...i like pinball games with tons of smaller things to do besides power ramps. The simpsons was a fantastic pinball game as well.

I love a ton of your classics and I'm glad you share the same enthusiasm for Dragon's Lair as i do and forever will. I still plan on getting Dirkl the Daring and Singe on my back. Maybe Daphne cause she's such the cutie between them or something.

Hard Drivin'? Oh man, that polygonal mess hurt my head so much when i used to play it, but loved the cabinet it came in. Nice list!

Ed, bump n' jump and so many of those games you mentioned i only playe in the home versions. I do indeed love bump n jump tho and jungle hunt and moon patrol are classic childhood memories, almost like they were ALWAYS in my brain as memories. Spooky.........

I am a child of the mid 90s, when arcades slowly got violated and then almost decomissioned by home entertainment systems. Alas, the only knowledge I have of arcades are the overpriced onces at Six Flags, the lame Kiddy ones at Chuck E. Cheeses, and the always broken ones at the Movie Cinema. However, there is this place in PA or NJ that sometimes they show an informercial for on Public Access TV. it's called TNT amusements, and it's an arcade machine dealer, but they rent it out for parties and stuff. I always wanted to go there, and I've watched the informercial so many times. :O!

There was only one original Street Fighter arcade that I remember and it was in my local video shop (VHS = video).
