I just showed my girlfriend Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring for the first time in her life- well, she saw it once when having an extreme fever and vowed to never watch it again, until I told her I'd personally go find an orc in the forest near her house, slay it and make a frilly coat out of its hide for her to give it another chance- and it got me thinking about what people's opinions of the films where that have taken over the original Star Wars flicks as the movies I'm talking about when referring to "The Trilogy".

Which one of the flicks is your fav and how would you rank them all? If your answer is "F, F and F-", go take your Hobbit hate somewherez else!

Return of the King- A+

One of the more perfect films I've ever seen, and possibly one of the best things I've seen period. An amazing journey comes to a close in one of the most intense and fulfilling way possible. I don't wanna say this dwarfs other movies labeled as "epic", but the movie is roughly a hundred times more amazing than a fireworks show beamed directly into your senses while eating a New York-style pizza hand delivered by the Swedish Bikini Team. The extended version of this movie I like LESS than the theatrical one, because it takes away lots of the surprises you see later in the film and shows Gandalf as a gigantic pussy with the head Ring Wraith splintering his staff like it's a dead twig in August. I was one of the few people who wanted three more endings on top of the five that we were already given.

The Fellowship of the Ring- A

Introductory movies don't get much better than this one. Really well paced, everything made as clear as it could be when you have a zillion separate races of beings big and pet-sized running around (and naming your two head evil dudes Sauron and Sauromon is just a weeeeeee bit confusing, JRR!), it succeeds in ways that something like the first X-Men never could and seems like a flick not leading you by the brainstem through the paces of introduction, like an awkward meeting and mingling with all your grandmother's friends at her nursing home. The extended version didn't really faze me one way or the other, helping nor hurting the final film with the exception of having a lot more detail on the mini pothead hobbits which I greatly enjoyed.

The Two Towers- A-

My least favorite of the three flicks, and by "least favorite", I really mean "the least incredible and life-affirming". Some great battle scenes and plot development besides, Clerks 2 actually made the same joke I had been saying about this ultimately awesome bridge-the-gap movie in regards to the plot of the three hour-plus running time: "Hi, I'm an Elf, a Human and a dwarf running over epic landscapes. And we're gonna keep running while you watch us like suckers. Yup, still movin!" The extended version I thought was the best example of putting bits into the film that really added in some nagging problems i had with the flow and plot of this one.

So, what's your ranking?

Also, the behind the scenes on each movie's extended editions is nearly as fascinating and all-inclusive as the films themselves.

PS- I'm not a fantasy nerd either and have not dressed up like any of the characters during my entire life.

I still like Two Towers the best, but I'm not sure why. The other two tie for second in my book.

My favorite was definitely Fellowship of the Ring, partly because I remember being completely bowled over with happiness when I saw it, because it did not "ruin the books" for me at all. Or, like, y'know.

i'm not a huge LOTR fan, but probably Two Towers.

Return of the King was absolutely my least favorite because it ended like...five different times. Way too long.

The Fellowship of the Ring. Because it made me like Boromir. I hated him in the book.

And I almost cried when Gandolf "died." Despite knowing he didn't. That's pretty good filmmaking, I think.

Pizazz, ANALYZE that feeling for me! Why is it your fav?

Jackanapes, you'll probably lose three hundred percent respect for my opinion in all of this, but i have yet to read the books! Many of my friends had read it and helped me navigate through much of the backstory brushed upon in the dialog of the flick but really exbounded in the book, and I didn't want the progression of the movie to be spoiled by knowing what happened.

Also, when I saw the first flick, after the first five minutes of the film, my friend leaned over and whispered, "yeah, that pretty much sums up the entire hobbit!" I'm really excited to see the theatrical version of the Hobbit tho, as I read that as a kid not knowing the more epic story it preceded.

Steve and Snake- They are all one story, but not one movie! They all have beginnings and endings...in fact, the spider part happened in the second book but was shifted to the third movie for the tonal reasons.

Tracer- After watching like ten plus hours of film, i didn't mind a movie ending that many times. I found out the book did the same thing and Jackson always wanted to be as faithful to the material as possible, especially since the film turned out to be almost as much about samwise than frodo or the ring.

Wardrobe- What was Boromir like in the book?

HA! My friend teared up when Gandalf died as well. He just told me the movie was the best thing he could imagine from the book's source material, and seeing it up on the big screen really brought it all out of him again!

It sucks Petey Jackson doesn't wanna direct the Hobbit since the ordeal of making the LOTR movies nearly killed his mind, but i heard he's gonna have a ton of input into the flick's direction.

I'm not a massive fantasy/sci-fan fan, which i think is all the more reason my love of these films is that much more a testament to good storytelling, groundbreaking direction and cinematography, and the love of all those people making the film putting everything they could and more into it. i AM a nerd in most other ways tho. *makes uncomfortable snorting laughter, adjusts glasses*

the books really depend on you reading carefully because it's so easy to miss so many things.

that's what makes the movies great...they didn't overlook anything (they're not exactly the books but you can tell that it's for a reason)

once my dad and i actually watched them ALL (the extended versions) in one (exaggeration?!) sitting.

YES.

i think ive seen the fellowship too many times now so ive started not liking it as much. but its still fantastic... i know most people like the two towers the least, but in my mind thats how the books went too.

right now though return of the king is still my favorite.

i speak of the extended versions though, because the two towers and return of the king really left out some stuff, i felt, in theaters... now am reading your original post to see you thought the same.

omg im not a nerd. omg i want to watch them again now.

Steve, the books I hear are written more like an encyclopedia than a novel, which sounds damned confusing.

Wardrobe- No worries about Star Wars nerdery, I'm actually one of the few folks i know who liked the second prequel the best of the three new ones (only the first one i thought was a complete and utter dissapointment). I don't think the new three in any way touch the magic and heart-felt emotion of the origianl trilogy, I just take them as bonus gifts to fill in more of the story and the second and third ones accomplished that for me.

Also, can anyone solve this arguement I had with someone at work a few months back: they were convinced that only a woman could destroy the head ring wraith in return of the king because he kept saying "don't you know no man can kill me!" and then the girlie pulls off her mask and gives the ultimate grrrrrl power line, "i am NO MAN!" and beats the fuck out of him. I just thought that was an added line of modern day woman kick-ass which i was all for, but I don't think that literally meant a male couldn't kill him. Is there anything in the books about this?

Kayce, I don't think that i could watch all three flicks, let laone the EXTENDED VERSIONS (!) in one day. I am amazed if you could get through two in a row as much as i love them. I agree with you tho, the more you watch all three, the more fellowship is the slowest of the three. I won't subtract anything because fellowship isn't as thrilling the tenth time i've seen it!
FRICKINAWESOME
FRICKINAWESOME on Jul 06 '08 at 12:34am
Nope Kayce, I didn't read them b/c i wanted to be surprised at the movie's conclusion and somehow i kept the ending out of my brain until i finally saw it on screen. Since the films, I just haven't gotten around to reading them yet, but i think the movies should be able to stand on their own. And they do!

i read them when i was younger because my dad loved tolkien. its the same reason ive read hitchhikers guide to the galaxy so many times.

which by the way, is the most disappointing book to movie transition for me ever. ever .ever. those books/radio transcripts/etc would each need their own separate movie, instead of trying to cram that many pages into one movie... which 70% of the plot of the film was not from the books at all. bleckbleckbleck.
