So yesterday at my job I'm pretty sure I uncovered some kind of scam. I haven't figured out what his method or reasoning was behind what he was doing, and I've been thinking about it since I left work yesterday. Anyway, I'll give you the deets, and you can try and figure out what's going with me. Okay? Alright baby. First of all, here is some basic explanations of the rewards/redemptions we have going on at my job.

Jobdeets:

-We have a rewards card, when you purchase items using it you receive points based on the amount you spend. $10.00 = 100 points = .10$
-Usually we have promotions at my job, where if you spend a certain amount on games, you receive a coupon that allows you to take a certain amount off of your next gaming purchase. (in this case, you get a $15.00 off coupon towards games if you spend $40.00 or more) You can combine these coupons together for one purchase. So for instance, you can take three 15$ off coupons and use them together to take $45.00 off of one game so long as they are all still active (meaning that it's within the dates that the coupon is valid for)
-For the next two days, if a customer spends $50.00 or more on merchandise, they receive a $5.00 gift card which can be used at a later date.

The Story

Okay, so this guy comes in and he wants to buy up all of the stock for a few titles. Including Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time 3D, Skyward Sword, and Rage for both PS3 and X360. In total there were maybe 50 games, he would've bought more if we had more. His reasoning for doing so was that it was for his nephew who lives out of state and has an online store and Delaware has no sales tax so it's cheap.

He wanted me to ring up each item in separate transactions. He had various odd items for like .99$ so that he could make each transaction over $50.00 (Skyward sword is $49.99, Rage is $29.99, and Ocarina of Time is 39.99). Anyway, this was all pretty fishy already, but I couldn't think of a good enough reason as to why I should deny the sale, after all, there wasn't really any posted limit as to how many of a non-sale item you could buy.

When I went to begin scanning things, i still felt really weird. This only got worse when I scanned his rewards card and it said his account had been suspended. I've never witnessed that before, I've seen rewards cards that have no longer been active, or that just didn't work, but I've never gotten a prompt that said a rewards account was suspended. He gave me some faulty reason as to why it came up, like because he had neglected to redeem points or something stupid, I was too anxious at this point to really even register what he was trying to say. Something was up.

At this point, I decided to call up to the service desk just to make sure it was cool to sell him all these freaking games. They told me as long as it isn't posted that there was a limit to purchasing the items that I could probably sell it to him, but just to make sure, I should call the manager. So I called the manager, and he agreed to selling the dude all the games and shit. But he said I couldn't do it through separate transactions because he's just one customer. Which was exactly the explanation I needed because I couldn't figure out how to deny the dude. So I told the guy that I could sell him all the games, but only in a single transaction, at which point, he left the store very angrily. He didn't buy anything, and left me with a cart full of like travel sized hand sanitizers and bottles of soda, and like 50 games that I had to lock up again.

Now, remember how earlier I mentioned the $15.00 coupon that you receive for spending $40.00 or more, and the 5$ gift cards? I'm trying to figure out how all that ties into everything.

TO THE FORENSICS LAB.

First, does a customer get BOTH the $5 gift card and $15 coupon if they spend over $50?

Here's my theory, assuming the above is true. Although it's dependent upon your store's policies on promotions/gift cards and returning merchandise:

Dude buys a shit ton of games along with those minor purchases, so he gets a lot of those $15 coupons, as well as a bunch of $5 off coupons.

Dude does not open any of the games.

Dude comes back a day or two later with all his gift cards and basically buys even more games for free because of all the gift cards.

Dude waits another day or two and returns all the unopened games he originally bought, but keeps the games he got with the gift cards.

Dude just scammed your store.

Alternatively, dude slowly returns the games over a period of a couple of weeks, so as to seem less suspicious. Hopefully, in his mind, he doesn't deal with the same salesperson every day.

if your store has a standard "return unopened merchandise within 14 or 30 days for a full refund" policy, then you could definitely be open to scams with those gift card deals

Possibly, but it all depends on the store's policies, and whether or not the gift cards are tied to the receipt.

like, if you spend a certain amount, and then they just pull a gift card off the shelf and activate it for you, they could easily get scammed

My friend who worked at Target used to get people who would buy a bunch of pharmaceuticals using coupons and then return them for a full refund. They'd easily get like $1000 in profits from that.

We used to have a woman that would buy cakes with food stamps, sell them with her catering business, and then bring the receipt back and say the cake was bad, and get 200% back. My manager told her never to come back, 'cause that's how much Walmart cares about things.

Later, I saw her picture in the paper for getting arrested for a drug scam and it was hilarious.

Target is pretty dumb all around. My friend talked about people getting discounts for damaged merchandise, so then a lot of people would scratch or dent things on purpose to get the discount.

The best thing about it is that we had a bonus program that's based on sales, and every time someone steals something, we lose money from our bonus, but we're not allowed to say anything.

My conscience is totally clear so I'm just gonna go ahead and empty the shelf with a smile k? Why you deny me all these savings?! Let me speak to your manager! No wait, you know what? Screw you and this store! *huff* I'm outta hee..errree.

Because, shit's fascinating to me, doofus.

I'd like to add that the gift cards are only valid for a short window of time, from like the 4th of December to the 11th, I believe.

All I can imagine is Pear wearing a Batsuit at the checkstand. Right when he thinks somethin's up, he pulls the guy across the counter, gets right in his face and growls,

"YOU DON'T EVER COME BACK HERE.
- Guy: "I swear to God I won't..."
"SWEAR TO ME!"

Then somehow, in the next instant, he drops the guy from a rooftop.

He's dumb. Would have gotten away with it if he bought different games.

Alternatively, he lures young boys into his unmarked van with promises of video games. After extensive market research he has discovered those titles are most effective in enticing the children. He is collecting the gift cards to buy an HD video camera.

Whata your return policy? In all the places I've worked in the past, if something was bought on a gift card the money has to go back on a gift card which basically means that theres no way for him to translate that into real money.

Also the argument that he was buying for his relatives online store doesnt add up because he can just buy the games wholesale, most independent stores dont sell a vast amount of products but there are deals set up for them so they can still make a profit without pricing themselves out of the market.

Buying them from a rival store is crazy.

jet approves on Nov 29 '11 at 10:03am
he wasn't buying the games with gift cards though. he was buying them with cash to get coupons and gift cards. brian's theory sounds most likely.
stubby43
stubby43 on Nov 29 '11 at 10:16am
But its a video game store, once he's got the gift cards the only thing he can buy are games so what is he doing with the coupons and gift cards after?

If he buys a bunch of games with the gift cards hes just earnt and then he tries to return them for cash that shouldnt work because most companies only let you put a return back as store credit.
